My first flat tire in a long time.....

While I was out of town my wife had a flat on our 2014 Silverado and called Chevrolet roadside assistance for help. She was very happy with them, they arrived promptly, the tech was clean and polite and very careful with the truck. He put on my spare and put the flat in the back of the truck. I had the tire fixed the next day and put it on and then tried to put the spare back in place. What a pain in the a$$ to hook the spare to the cable assembly. I ended up using two floor jacks to lift it. Is there an easier way??

You lower the cable all the way plus a couple inches with the crank.

I cranked the cable down as far as it would go, but the it was still several inches from the wheel.

If you had flipped the wheel over would the rim had been closer to the cable?

I actually did have the wheel flipped to make it the closest. There is a big difference in which way it is turned.

I get a flat about once every few months in my line of work, got very good at changing flats over the last 17 years!

Did you try to pull hard on the cable?

Maybe it was just pinched or one loop went off the reel since the mech spooled the cable up empty.

The cable should have plenty of wire to hang loose so you can attach the spare with no problems. At least mine does. Never had a flat but I had to take the spare off to run some wires for my reverse lights.

Something must have been stuck, I went out today and I could lower the spare all the way down to the ground. All's well.

Something we do to our work trucks is put motor oil on the cable once a year or so, especially the older trucks. The winter time salt can cause the cable to rust to itself when wound up.

What kind of tire was it? The Goodyear LS2? I've never had a blow out or real flat running a Wrangler or Dueler, which is why I always upgrade. They'll take a puncture and seep air, but they're hard to really damage.

Once in college I drove over an area where somebody had dropped a box of roofing nails. The next morning I brought it to a gas station where my roommate worked and he pulled out 11 nails from my Wranglers. All were low but still drivable the next morning.

It was the stock goodyear tire. Something fairly big put a large hole in it, lucky they were able to boot it and it seems to be holding well. A new tire was priced to me at $230.
