thefireman11 Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I have a 2007 Silverado classic 4x4 5.3L. It has auto 4wd, 2wd, 4 highand 4 low. I noticed that my “Service 4WD” light was coming onrandomly. So I found some loose gravel to test the 4wd out and itwasn’t working. When I would push the 4HI button it would blink then Icould hear my transfer case switching over and the light would turnsolid like it was in 4wd but when I would get on it I could tell the4wd was not engaged. I tested it at the front drive shaft and thefront drive shaft spins freely when not engaged and doesn’t spinfreely when the 4wd is engaged. I put it up on the lift in the shopand engaged the 4wd and put it in gear and my front tires didn’t spinat idle but when I floored it they would spin just a little. So I putit in auto 4 and put it in gear and the front tires kicked in when theback started spinning, but it won’t in 4 high or 4 low. I took it outon the asphalt and drove in circles with it in 4 high and low and Icould tell that it wasn’t engaged. So when it snowed I tried my 4wdagain and again 4HI and 4LO wouldn’t work but the Auto 4 would work.Sometimes the lights on my switch panel are on and then other timesthere are no lights on until I hit the 2wd button. I have tried toscan it but none of the 4 scanners I tried would read the t-case..any ideas at all? Also I have a bad jerking/pop/clunk in my front end. It mainly does itwhen I turn my wheel to the right while backing up. Sometimes it doesit while turning forward and braking. But not near as often. It feelslike it is coming from my passenger side. And it is not just a noise,I can feel it. It makes the whole truck jerk. Could these issues berelated?
kstruckcountry Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I would say your first step is getting it scanned with a snap-on/gm full service scanner. No parts store scanner can read it. On the lift, in 4x4, in gear, does the front driveshaft spin or not?

kstruckcountry Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 That's important, that will tell you whether or not it's the axle or transfer case. But scanning it will tell you for sure.
gmtech4 Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 That's important, that will tell you whether or not it's the axle or transfer case. But scanning it will tell you for sure. System is disabled while there is a code , nothing works , doing the lift thing won't show anything
thefireman11 Posted July 15, 2015 Author Posted July 15, 2015 That's important, that will tell you whether or not it's the axle or transfer case. But scanning it will tell you for sure. Well I am currently out of the country for the next 3 months so I cant put it back on the lift.. but since the auto 4 worked just fine wouldn't that rule out the axle??
thefireman11 Posted July 19, 2015 Author Posted July 19, 2015 System is disabled while there is a code , nothing works , doing the lift thing won't show anything What do you mean system is disabled?
gmtech4 Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 What do you mean system is disabled? When there is an active code , the system is broken and therefore nothing works
thefireman11 Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 When there is an active code , the system is broken and therefore nothing works but the auto 4 still works fine.
thefireman11 Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 Cool ok.. thanks for the help?? I guess..
thefireman11 Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 does anyone know what transfer this truck comes with? 5.3. automatic. electronic shift with auto 4wd
gmtech4 Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 ok.. thanks for the help?? I guess.. It is very possible that you are wrong but I didn't want to say anything as I've been doing this technician crap for many yrs so if it makes you feel like a boss then I'll give that to you , I'm out , I tried to help but if you know more than me .... Enjoy , not sure why you posted here ......
thefireman11 Posted July 21, 2015 Author Posted July 21, 2015 It is very possible that you are wrong but I didn't want to say anything as I've been doing this technician crap for many yrs so if it makes you feel like a boss then I'll give that to you , I'm out , I tried to help but if you know more than me .... Enjoy , not sure why you posted here ...... Well that's weird because I have been driving my truck for years so I'm pretty sure I know what works and what doesn't. Not to mention the fact that I literally just had to use the auto 4 a couple months back when it snowed and it worked fine as I clearly stated. So therefor I am not wrong about that. I too am an auto service tech, went to school for it and worked for years in a shop as a tech. But I never touched these modern Chevy transfer cases so that is why I posted here, hoping a driveline tech that has had experience with it may know something more about it than me. I don't believe I ever once stated that I knew more than you or anyone else on here. So before you try to put me on blast, maybe get a little more back story and give a little more insight than "cool". It just makes you look like an ass. Thank you and have a wonderful day, "boss".
