Yukon - major problems?

Back again :)

Reading your posts again I'm trying to understand the best I can - I'm more like a five year old because I've never been really interested in this. Things change I guess.

It would be nice if you would help out again!

So, I'm supposed to keep the gas tank above 1/4 empty - now I wonder if I should do that in general, no matter what type of vehicle I drive. I never did that and can't remember any issues.

With the 'undersized brakes' I would like to know if it's possible to simply change that by getting 'better brakes'?

Are most parts available 'right away' or could I get into trouble?

Gary, would you recommend an upgrade to the MPFI system? What's the 'real difference'? What would be the cost?

I don't wanna get screwed over by a shop (and chances are good) in case my ride needs a repair just because I don't know enough.

Thanks!!

The reason to keep the gas at 1/4 or more is because the fuel pump is inside the gas tank, the fuel is used to cool the pump. I don't know what other vehicles do this, but in general, if the pump is in the tank, keep some fuel in it.

The brakes can't be upgraded without spending a lot of $$$. I looked into it, and it is not something that is easily done. The brakes aren't dangerous - they will stop the car. If you are used to driving 70s and 80s vintage cars, they will feel normal. If you are used to driving something newer, it may take some getting used to. Don't tailgate others, and estimate a very generous amount of stopping distance.

Parts are easily obtained. The longest my Tahoe has been down was a week, but it had a LOT done to it.

If you are willing to step up to a Suburban, you can get a 2500 series, which is the 3/4 ton platform. The 1500 is only a 1/2 ton. The 2500 is heavier duty, with stronger transmission and brakes. Yet another advantage of this generation over the new ones. No more 3/4 ton Suburbans.

Agreed on the 2500 info, love mine.As far as the MPFI upgrade it's typically done if the current injector module(aka spider)is shown to be bad and is causing the engine to run poorly.I had to have wife's burb towed to our local dealership where the put the scan tool & oscilloscope on it and found the bad module.Had it towed back home where I did the replacement. They were going to charge me upwards of $800.00 for the repair,I did it for less than $300.00.Keep in mind I work for a wholesale parts delivery warehouse so I got the parts cheap and I used Delphi(OEM)parts. Here's a pic of said part, new on the left.
