2005 5.3 oil consumption/valve cover/PCV question

Recommended Posts

My '05 Sierra 1500 Z-71 has developed a bit of a thirst for 5W-30 oil - - no smoke or puddles in the driveway, but seems to be digesting a quart every 800-1000 miles or so... I've owned it since new, and it didn't used to use any. 75,000 miles on the odometer. It has the 5.3 L33 aluminum block motor, and I've read some forum posts on the net that suggest changing the drivers side valve cover to a newer style may help oil consumption. I know that I do have the fixed orifice style valve, but does anyone know if the current GM valve cover (part 12570427) has a "revised" oil baffle design that is different that what mine currently has, and if so, if it may help with oil consumption? I know that most of the oil consumption issues were aimed at the AFM systems on later 5.3's, but curious... I could also remove the existing cover and see if the oil drain holes are plugged up - - but not sure if I'd be better off if the current GM cover is an improved version of what I currently have.

Thanks for the advice!
