Transfer case leak

Can't say for the front but the rear output shaft is a peice of cake.  I was quoted $100 labor plus the seal to install it.  It took me about 20 minutes.

4 bolts to disconnect the read driveshaft.  Pull driveshaft out.  Pull old seal, install new seal, and lube and install driveshaft.

I would think the front should be about as simple.  Good Luck.

Are you sure it's not the vent tube leaking? This was the cause of the leak I had on my 2002 Tahoe. Took the dealer 15 minutes to fix it.

What did they do to the vent tube?

I occassionally get some autotrac out of the vent tube but it appears to be an open tube with nothing in the end.  The only thing I could think about was at high speed, the wind blowing across the end of the tube could draw some out from the tcase.

I dont think it is the tube because I can whipr the seal and it is really wet.  And then drive.  Then it is wet again.  And the Blue fluid drips to the bottom of the case and the wind blows it all over the frame.  I will look more into it on Sunday.  Thanks for the info

The front output seal will be a little more complicated than the rear driveshaft seal. The rear driveshaft is a slip yoke, pull the driveshaft out, there is the seal. The front driveshaft bolts to a fixed flange on the output shaft of the transfer case. Remove the driveshaft, remove the nut holding the flange on to the output shaft, remove the flange, change the seal, clean the flange and be sure the seal surface isn't worn, install the flange and torque the nut that holds it on, reinstall driveshaft.

Resurrecting an old discussion, :P but I think I have this same problem on my '99 Silverado Z-71. The dealer called it the "input shaft" seal. The leaking seal is beside the engine oil filter on a 4.8L engine. They quoted me $66 for the seal and $60-80 labor.

Is this the same leaking seal you were discussing?
