new 4wd switch today

I had a service 4wd light come on the message box a couple days ago, then the small orange light beside the 2wd was out, I wasn't even running 4wd, is this common on the 99's and do you guys think the new switch will fix, the dealer seemed shakey on what the cause was, I do think the switch was bad, cause if you ping it, the light would go out and come back on, are they this touchy? anybody? thanks . already had the fuel regulator changed and the abs brain, the radio died, what is next on the 99's and do the early 2000 trucks also have electrical gremlins?

Yes you have a bad switch. My 2WD light would go out and I would tap the dash and it would come back on just like you described. I just did mine like a year ago and haven't had the 4WD light come on since.

I put a new 4WD switch in my 2000 on Sunday. Took about 10 minutes and solved the problem. :thumb:

Hey rtbrick - my service 4wd light has been coming on for several weeks now and tried to put it in awd and it would not go in so I need to replace. Can you give some details as to how it's done/where it's located etc.

That part number for the switch is 15709327. And you can order it for cheap on one of our preffered vendors over <---. Its very simple just take the dash bezel off and pull the 4wd switch out put the new one in and your done.

hamhawk, sorry for the delay. I coach little league baseball (13-14) and it has had me on the run this week.

Putting in the switch is a piece of cake. Tilt the steeering wheel all the way down. Remove the dash bezel that goes around the speedometer/readio area. Just grip it on the edge and tug. It is held in place with push in/pull out type of "pin" connectors. You'll have to use a little finese to work it out over the steering wheel, but it's easy. Now you see you switch in the dash housing. It has two tabs on either side and one each top and bottom. My Hanes manual says to lift it up and out, but I had to stick my finger in one of the sides to lift up on the retaining tabs and work it out sideways. You can look at the new switch to see what I'm talking about. Once the switch is out simply unplug it, plug in the new one, snap it back in the dash housing and put the bezel back on. Bam! You're done!

Hope it goes easy for you. Check around on the internet as I found a couple of references to switch replacement and basically the same instructions.

Thanks for the info. I bought the switch and popped it in in the dealer parking lot in 5 min. That couldn't have been any easier. And 2 days now and no "service 4wd" light. So far so good. :thumb:

Switch autopsy! And if I can get it to work, I might add Auto 4x4 to mine. My truck is prewired to it since I swapped the entire dash harness to that of a Z71, and I also have the Auto 4x4 computer too.

Plus I bet there's tons of good parts in it like LEDs and those tiny hard to get bulbs.
