Navigation upgrade

Just received an email from GMC Navigation Team. A new updated map software is available for my 2014 at a cost of 159.99. Part no. 2337625. That seems like alot of money for a one time upgrade. If it was a lifetime service the price of 159 would sound much better. Are there any other options out there for a navigation map upgrade for less money?

The upgrade is locked to your vin by the map vendor before shipping. Be careful to check if the disc/stick is unlocked before you purchase.

The nav in these trucks is so horrible it's unuseable. My 2015 maps are missing roads build 5 years ago.

 

And don't get me started on the routing. Every route is the "scenic" route. Lol.

 

Google maps is free. And accurate.

Actually, I found the navigation to be more sophisticated that expected. It's definitely not as good as Garmin but it's not bad either. I did read somewhere once, that it takes approximately 3 years for road changes to be recognized in a new map. The process is pretty lengthy and interesting reading if you have a few minutes to spare. Humans actually have to travel the road and record the coordinates. Personally, I too, am having a small issue with the accuracy with the roads. There is a road in my area that was rerouted a few years back and every time I travel up the road it shows me going off road until the old and new route converge. Everything else is accurate and my area experienced a housing/commerce boom over the last ten years so there have been a lot of changes in the roadways. I really think the value of an annual update is the accuracy of the POI's for those that do extensive traveling. If you don't, I would only upgrade the map every 3 or 4 years just to stay as current as possible.
