Most of the problems with GM's 6 and 8 speeds don't have to do with the "learn" process. They have to do with horrible tuning, bad torque converters, thermistor/harness issues, or other mechanical and tuning problems. There are a lot of trucks that don't shift well. Even the guys that say that theirs shifts fine will add a caveat that they get occasional confusion or harsh / flair 2-1 or 1-2 shifting. I still can't explain why some trucks are better than others, but I can tell you that driving the truck shouldn't be a frustrating experience, and this model year / series of truck is much worse than previous model years.

Actually they do. Except that the learning process involves poorly trained workers who assemble these transmissions or major components that go into these trnasmissions.

Haha bait? Everything I stated is factual. 100%.

Let your transmission break in before you judge it. The 8-speed is a similar design to the 6-speed, quirks and all. The learning process in the control module is part of that.

Well hell I guess everyone should just come to you with all their questions since you have all the facts! I understand the learning process but some manufacturers are producing some slow learners. It seems you feel a strong need to defend the gm transmission and its crappy tuning so carry on.

I was just sharing what I know. You claim GM is the only company with transmission problems when in fact every single half-ton currently on the market has owners complaining about the exact same transmission issues you had. Normally I wouldn't say anything but when you barely gave the new transmission a week I decided to say something.

GM and Ford use the same adaptive shift strategy. Both state the same thing - it takes at least 500 miles or several days for the transmission to learn your driving habits. If you aren't consistent in how you drive, that adaptive shift proceess can take even longer or even appear to be confused from the driver's perspective.

And every manufacturer's transmission has had 'bad' tunes the past few years. A quick google search will show that. Shifts so soft it feels like its slipping, harsh downshifts, early upshifts that lug the engine, confused shifts. It's the unfortunate result of the EPA's fuel economy regulations. It isn't going to get any better. That's why tuning is as popular as ever, regardless of the brand of truck you drive.

You are correct I did not have the new transmission long but had the original for four months and there were several things I accepted as normal for that transmission. I realize the six speed went through some of these things at first, I owned one of those as well. I also am aware of what's available if you google. However the six speed tundra and f-150 "I"had over a seven year period never at any point behaved anything like the gm transmissions. The f-150 I have now with 1000 miles has been smooth and quiet since day one and while they may be learning and adapting it is doing so without me being aware which I appreciate. You should at least have to own an 8 speed before you speak so adamantly on their behalf!

Yeah but some of us do own 8 speeds.... and mine is fine and has been from day one beyond the clunkiness cold the wiring harness swap fixed.... that's it. What am I supposed to hate this transmission because you didn't like yours... lol

I had two 2013 F150s before this and one of the reasons I have this new 2015 Chev is the one Fords transmission. The pump was screwed in it and Ford wouldn't fix it... not to mention the random bangs and harsh shifts it had. That truck had 40000 miles and between that tranny on its way out... the battery constantly going dead at random and sync freezing I decided it was time for it to go. My second F150s 6R80 is good... as is the rest of the truck. I never liked the 6L80E even though it's a sister to a 6R80 they don't act the same and with that I totally agree. I also have a 2015 Tundra and it drives fine too... they all make screw ups and lemons. Hopefully your Ford treats you better than mine...

And actually how many Ford forums are you on? This board has tons of whiners. ..but F150forums is just as bad. From my ecoboost runs shitty, to my 5 liter knocks, or my tranny doesn't shift right, or my truck vibrates... it goes on and on and on.... kind of like here. Plenty of those guys are "I will never buy another Ford" too... My thing is if the 6.2 was still available in a F150 then I would have probably bought another Ford... I don't want an ecoboost for my own reasons not influenced by the forums and the 5 liter is a gutless bag... so I bought a GM. Maybe next time it will be a Nissan... who knows lol.

I understand there are people in this thread that own 8 speeds who are happy with them and having no problems. Most of my comments were to one person within the thread and I usually quoted his remarks as you have now done with mine. We are all where we are because of our experiences good or bad with a particular product or company. I simply have not had good luck with GM as others may have not with other manufacturers. I debated even updating the thread for this reason. I hope others are having good luck with their truck. I don't wish anybody any ill will. I was being told I was not giving the truck an opportunity to learn and simply disagreed with that comment. It was frustrating for me to have the transmission replaced in the first place on a new truck which was supposed to be a revised transmission after they pulled all the transmissions back in February of this year. I realize it happens but when it happens to you it carries more weight. I have sat and watched as one not having any problems and probably felt the same as some of you, thinking "well, what's the big deal, the manufacturer took care of it". Just depends what side of the fence you are on as to how you view things.

I get that but going to a Ford won't necessarily solve your issues.... or a Toyota or Ram etc. I have probably the nicest dealer I have ever dealt with being the local Ford one and they tried...... but Ford wouldn't do a damn thing as a company so unless the dealer was to eat the costs ( and I mean I wouldn't) what are they supposed to do? I dumped the truck, but I don't hate the company or think they are all garbage either...... my FX4 is the same 6.2/6R80 trans as the XLT was and it's a good truck.... and a fun truck. I understand frustration but then again I kind of don't....... I have had more issues than you have had obviously with a few different brands. I hated GM for the GMT900 trucks..... those heaps did nothing but piss me off throughout their lifespan as I was stuck with one here and there and they all sucked lol.... like fighting with GM for an engine sucked..... but these aren't those rigs so here I am again.

Once you start to realize that manufacturers warranties are a joke.... and you will have to fight for most everything you start to not really care anymore. My truck is a February 2015 build...... must have got an anomaly lol...... and according to the site I know I did.

Pointless conversations. Never said Ford or anybody elsewould solve all my problems. Some of you seem offended that somebody would go drive something else. My only regret was wasting time responding in this thread. Later.

Lol. Yes... because me owning an F150 and a Tundra would be offended by you buying a Ford. I guess it's this easy... telling everyone they need to drive a truck that's a problem in your eyes is what's pointless.... because its your truck and only your truck that was junk... plain and simple. Now when the Ford gives issues I expect to see you complaining on F150 forums about how much of a heap it is too... and that they should all buy a Tundra...

Lol man you are a trip. I must own your ass! You can't quit thinking about my post and waiting for me to post again! Go find you a woman or go drive your awesome truck!

Right..... says the guy that now has lowered himself to childish rubbish... Believe whatever you wish..... and go enjoy your Ford... for now.

The most annoying thing is that this forum gets ruined when guys start threads with the sole purpose of complaining. There are entire websites (carcomplaints.com for example) designed for that. This section of the forum is for guys that are looking for answers or advice, whether it's fixing minor annoyances or how to deal with warranty issues. I commented on this thread with good intentions to let Tex know about the TAPS system. It seems a bit stupid that GM stood behind their truck and replaced the transmission, only for Tex to dump it a week later. I don't care what you drive Tex, I'm annoyed you're wasting everyone's time creating this thread when you obviously had no plans on keeping the truck, fixed or not. If you want to air out your grievances with GM, there are better places than the TROUBLESHOOTING section of gm-trucks.

Whether your intentions were good or not is up to interpretation. I think I posted in the appropriate place. Never said GM didn't stand behind their product. There are obviously many people dissatisfied with the 8 speed. Just go look at all the other threads about it. You came into the thread ready to educate me with your wisdom and to police it. Since a few of you have gotten so damn sensitive I went back and read my post updating my situation again. I'm still OK with what I said and how I said it. So to ME the most annoying thing about this forum is people like you who try and get on people's ass that don't agree with you.

    • Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.
    • There are no stickers in your glovebox?
    • Look at the numbers on the stickers in the door jam...
    • Yes, every time the developer updates his code, you must recompile. I will private message you with the latest because it changes pretty much with every version.
    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
