installing windows 7

So, I bought a laptop (HP) in March and it came with Windows 8, working just fine. After the update to Windows 8.1 I am not happy anymore, not at all.

I was hoping to put back Windows 7 on my laptop by using the key from my old laptop (acer) but as usual I don't have a cd to work with.

My questions would be can I use the acer-Win 7 key at all, how can I use it w/o having an installer cd and is there an easy way to do this?

I find Win7 is the best to work with and after reading about the new Win 10 I am even more a W in7 fan.

Tired of asking google :(

Someone?

thanks, Mel

I actually like 10. It is a lot better than 8 and 8.1. 7 is no longer relevant. I

She will need an OEM HP 7 key that is unused or a new Microsoft key. As long as her 8.1 is legit 10 can be upgraded.

Let's stay on topic. She wants to reinstall 7. No buts.

Reread. Her HP laptop came with 8. It updated to 8.1. Her old Acer had 7.

She wants to put 7 on a laptop that came with 8. She wants to use the Acer key on the HP. Now to make this easy if she is a student or knows one, they can usually get an IS at an extreme discount through the school. For me 7 Ultimate was only $50. Another mod could have got it free through KSU.

Guys,

thanks a lot for all the posts!

Okay, patriot is right... I do like Win 7 the most and really want it "back", I don't like Win 8.1 and I don't even think about trying Win 10 after reading a lot of reviews. Free isn't always the way to go.

Yes, the acer got the Win 7 I would like to put on my 'new' HP. I wasn't sure if that would work at all, AND I don't know how to do this. Imagine a two year old Lol

I am not a student and yes I could go and buy Win 7 at bestbuy but if I am able to use the one from acer why would I go and spend money.

uhm what??

Does that mean I cannot use the acer Win 7 ond my HP (with pre-installed 8)??

Ive always been told, and havent tried this since Vista, that oem keys are tied to a piece of hardware that registers it on the computer. Like an old Dell i did. I tried to use an HP key. Wouldnt register as a legit copy because that key didnt belong to it. Kind of like trying to use your house key in your neighbor's door. You might get lucky, but i wouldnt count on it working

I've bought used keys and they work fine, as long as the comp they WERE on isn't still being used.

There was my issue. I did not wipe the old machine and take it offline

@Chris

I don't need the acer anymore and want to get rid of it anyways. The plan was /is to deinstall Win 7 form the acer, deinstall Win 8/8.1 from HP and install Win 7 afterwards. Now I know what version it is I'm going to do this step by step.

I was thinking to copy the Win 8 form the HP on an extra USB just in case. Does that work and make sense?

You guys rock!!
