Ya and what makes it worse is when building and you click on this package or that package it deletes something else. Buy with a totally different combo it's doable. My local dealer didn't even know the body styles were changing a bit so I doubt they could navigate through the process and get the truck I want.

If you are serious about pulling and have multiple things to tow I strongly suggest considering a HD. The new/redesigned 6.6 turbo diesel is a thing of beauty and for the $10k if I had things to pull I would seriously consider it, heck still kind of want to myself without stuff to pull.

 

These 1500's max out at 12,000 lbs no matter the configuration and the payload is only what 2000? No amount of mods will help there short of redoing the entire suspension and gearing and axel etc etc. At that point why bother just get an HD IMO.

The reason that you can only get a 3.42 with a 6.2 is because a higher gearing would put it over this 12,000 lb threshold and after that other stuff would just start popping and falling off starting with your suspension. The tongue weight would also cause your nose to lift and the front wheels to lose most if not all of their traction.

Assuming the '16s are the same as the '15s, you can get everything you need for trailering in a Z71 package.

 

The max tow package however includes all trailer equipment, plus a beefier rear end (had higher gears at 3.73 for '15, but not with '16s) and other suspension upgrades that allows for higher payloads. You also get the towing mirrors. You cannot get a Z71 package AND max tow however.

Uhm, don't know about the 6.2, but you can with the 2500 duramax. The max tow package includes a separate transmission cooler.

Well when my truck was ordered it was supposed to be a max tow 6.2l. Sometime in the process the max tow option got removed. I hooked the truck to my 9600lb trailer, and took it on a 25 mile loop that included a couple steep inclines. The trucks water temp would rise very quickly, and the transmission downshifted a lot.

 

When they re-ordered my truck and got it right I did the same loop. The temperature was 25 degrees hotter on this trip, and the water temp gauge barely moved, and the transmission downshifted a lot less. I'm guessing the extra line pressure from the transmission working harder increased the water temp quicker on the non max tow truck. But it doesn't tow as well as our 16 3500 dually duramax.

you can get the trailer braking with Z71 is what he means, also the Z71 gets you hill descent control which is nice for towing. Where Max Tow can't get Hill Descent

I ordered my truck with the max tow package and it has grade braking, I'm in Canada but that shouldn't make a difference there all built in the same plant.

Not sure of the proper name but mine is the one that uses the engine and tranny to slow down, it comes on when I come down a local bridge downshifts and revs to slow the truck down.

I just looked it up its "grade braking" with the max tow package.

Grade braking is engine and transmission braking when at road speeds. Sometimes it will downshift on it's own to help maintain the set speed.

 

 

Hill descent control uses applies the brakes, to maintain a set speed at hill very low (crawling?) speeds.

 

"HDC can maintain vehicle speeds between 3 and 22 km/h (2 and 14 mph) on an incline greater than or equal to a 10% grade. A blinking HDC light indicates the system is actively applying the brakes to maintain vehicle speed.

When HDC is activated, the initial HDC speed is set to the current driving speed. It can be increased or decreased by pressing the +RES or SET- steering wheel controls or by applying the accelerator or brake pedal. This adjusted speed becomes the new set speed.

HDC will remain enabled between 22 and 60 km/h (14 and 37 mph); however vehicle speed cannot be set or maintained in this range.

It will automatically disable if the vehicle speed is above 80 km/h (50 mph) or above 60 km/h (37 mph) for at least 30 seconds. 5 must be pressed again to re-enable HDC.

When enabled, if the vehicle is at a speed above 22 km/h (14 mph) and less than 60 km/h (37 mph), a DIC message will display."

Yes, a Z71 truck will have grade braking and HDC.
