Engine Problem on 7000 Mile Silverado

Hi all,

This is my first post as i generally lurk around. I recently bought a 2015 5.3 Silverado. I love the truck but i had a weird problem that caused it to get towed back to the dealership. I was just sitting at a stop light after running the truck for about 15 minutes and it started to idle horribly, i kept the rpms up until i could pull off the road to restart it. Once I restarted it wouldnt hold idle and would start knocking and die. I kept restarting and tried to limp the truck back home but it wouldnt stay running long enough for me to get anywhere. There were no lights on the dash and all the gauges seemed normal. I called a towing company and the truck couldnt pull itself onto the flat bed it was running so bad, i had him take it to the dealship where i purchased it and it sat from saturday to monday.

On Monday I got a call saying they couldnt get the truck to re create the problem. I am in shock that the truck is running fine now, everyone was convinced the engine was shot from the knocking sound. They drove it around town and told me to come pick it up. No codes no anything. They thought it might have been bad fuel but they checked and it was fine. Now im worried the truck is going to start randomly dieing and ill have to send it back to GM. I love the truck to death but do any of you have any ideas on whats causing this?

that sucks because you will no confidence in your truck now. Even if they claim to find the problem.. that doubt will still be with you....

Don't panic about the knocking noise yet. It could have been nothing more than the ECU backing off the ignition timing too far to kill the engine. This happens when the ECU receives a bad voltage input from one of the sensors even if there is no problem. It could be an intermittent problems with one of the sensors. It may have sent wrong voltage signals to the ECU, like for example the engine is overheating, but in reality it was not.

 

If an engine develops a knock due to some mechanical problem, this knock will not go away. If it happens due to some electronic intermittent malfunction in the control system, as is most likely in your case, the engine will not be harmed.
