Why does my heat suck!!

I'm going crazy , I let my '00 Silverado z71 truck warm up for 15 mins and my heat still sucks. Seems like when I'm driving for hours on end it may warm up. But it's just really inconsistent. I put a new thermostate in and truck runs at 190-200 *f no matter what. My blower motor works on all settings and I have clean cabin air filters . Idk I don't get it sometimes it will actually blow hot air but most the time it's just warm and takes forever to just get to warm air blowing. Even my foot controls defrost all that works like it should .

 

Could the actual hand controls being going bad. Where I switch from heat to cool. Because sometimes I'll switch to blue (cold) and it really doesn't change anything. It still stays blowing the same "warm" air. But then sometimes it will actually switch to cold air .

 

I need heat badly please help!

the blend door could be sticking. I had a '01 silverado that had it stick on heat. Sometimes cycling the ignition and rotating the hot/cold knob would get it to move. It was either an actuator going bad or dust/dirt build up on the gears/door.

 

could also be an air bubble in the heater core from when the cooling system was partially drained.

On getting any air out how would I do that?

 

Also where are you measuring temps at? On the heater core two lines on the firewall?

 

Got a new thermostate shows 190' in the truck gauge.

 

I'm leaning towards it being a blender door problem.

if the heater has air in it, you may hear the coolant moving through it at start up or when you rev the engine. I know my dodge has some in it. The best way I know of to get air bubbles out is to pull the cooling system into a vacuum. They make special tools that connect to your radiator cap, they work really slick.

 

If I was going to bet on it, I'd say its the blend door sticking though. You just have to dig in and see what you can get to. I never looked into my silverado's. I just traded it off in the winter. :lol:

Yeah I actually used to hear it like bubbles and liquid making noise in the heater core. It doesn't do that anymore so I'm assuming the air has worked it self out.

 

The blender door, is this a pain to get to?

Do easy things first... Take the heater core inlet and return hose off and flush out the radiator with a hose, and if water comes through then use compressed air. Repeat a couple times then hook it back up and see if your heat works. It fixed mine, and my heater core bubbled like your did too.

I just did my water pump and my heater barely worked after amd only when higher than idle RPM. Found out I had a lot of air and it was stuck in the heater core. Took me a couple dozen time "burping" it to get the air out.

 

Park on a hill, let it warm up with heat on all the way and leave the cap off of the res. Took me quite a few times to get it all out.

My truck did the same thing as yours did.

Remove both hoses going to your heater core and flush them both a few times.

I bet you'll see all kinds of gunk come out.

It seems to me that every year I have to do this and my truck is an 01.

I just replaced the thermostat as it wasn't working to well and I flushed as much as I could out of everything.

    • I don't think so. 😏 Cars? Our experience will diverge there as well. I was buying cars with 200K (1970's) when I started and quite a few were pretty solid cars. Alternators and charging systems are an envy. But I replaced few water pumps or power steering pumps then. Rebuilt carburetors but replaced few. Mufflers are another place of OEM improvement. Stainless?     • The thermometer has been in my wife's 2008 envoy, my sons 2016 chevy, my friends 2020 1500 silverado all showing cooler readings. It's not the guage.
    • Have a question concerning trim levels. Ive not bought a new vehicle since 2006, and I have decided on a 2500 gmc pro or silverado custom. For anyone that has one of these 2 trim levels have you regretted not stepping up to the LT or SLE. I look at things as the more electronics the more problems to arise. I love the look of the old school gauges on the dash as well. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. 
    • If that guage has a way to adjust [hex on bottom], put that thing in a glass full of ice, put water in, put your gage in, let it sit for 3 minutes or so, and set it to 33 degrees.
