Tire chains/cables question

Hoping the plow guys will know this one, if a chain is labeled to fit 255/80r17 shouldn't it also fit LT255/80r17? What would be the difference?

Kinda ran in to this same deal cause I use Z cables. When I jumped to LT tire there bigger. Chains may be more forgiving in a small size difference.

Thanks. The reason I'm asking is because I'm waiting to buy chains until I buy new tires. Currently I'm running the oem 245/75r17 and I eventually want to bump up to an LT255/80R17 and the Z-Chains only list a fitment for the 255/80R17 minus the "LT". Any recommendations?

See that I looked where I bought mine at www.vulcantire.com found a LT 255/70/17. Might shoot them a email with that tire size they could look into it or maybe have a another that would fit. Did you purchase your truck with 17''? I looked all I saw were 18'' and up when I bought my truck in May 2015. I didn't see any 17'' tires on 2500.

Just got a nice reply from VulcanTire:

Doug,
Thank you for your question. When the LT is not listed there is no significant difference between the two. The chains listed for size 255/80-17 will work for your application.

We recommend either the SCC Z-Chain SV208 or the SCC Super Z-8 SV401 for your tire size and vehicle. Both cable chains will provide excellent traction in snow and ice conditions. The Z chain is a bit more durable, while the Z-8 requires only 6mm of clearance around the inside sidewall. You can find and order these by entering your tire size on our website here:

Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Oh yeah, without a doubt. I'll put them on right in my driveway. Now I'll obsess about whether or not I should

get chains for the oem tires or go without until i get the taller tires. This is the kind of stuff I lose sleep over.

lol dont be going OcD on us. I do the same crap myself worry over stuff. Its just in our nature i guess. :crackup:Your truck looks sharp kinda like white trucks to. I think there easier to keep cleaned up IMO.

Kind of a boring color but they do hide a lot of dirt. I still haven't decided what to do about the chains, but I have been researching tire sizes. I'm getting the level kit installed this Friday so after that's done I'll get a better picture of what tire size I'll want. I may even want to go to an 18 or 20 inch wheel.

I went with 18'' polished wheel, im a bit old school so I stayed away from the 20''. The polished wheel seems to be durable and cleans up easy. Either would look good on your truck, I went with the Michelin AT2 tire and there real smooth havent had any problems at all.

I agree with you about 18" over 20". I like having plenty of sidewall. I just got the truck back from the shop about 30 mins ago and of course it's too dark to check it out.
