Good product for flash rust on differential?

Recommended Posts

So after 1500 miles of no salt and no mud driving my 2016 is developing flash rust on the front of the differential and under the leaf spring mounts. Way to go GM.

Anyway, I would rather just take care of it myself instead of mentioning it to a dealer. Anyone here dealt with this before? Seems like I remember some products that convert rust, or encapsulate?

Thanks much.

Spray with WD-40 is probably the simplest.

But, as I did on my 03 that is in primo condition (so no need to bash GM) I simply wiped the cover with gear oil.

You don't need mud or snow for rust as soon as air(oxygen) hits metal it starts to rust, if you just cover it then it will just come back you need to sand or sand blast and cover immediately with one of the aforementioned products. I have done enough body work to know what happens and to be honest on the diffs it is cosmetic they are not likely to rust through or cause any issues at least not for a very long time.

I however do understand how you feel any rust look is just not cool :)

POR-15 works like a champ.no sanding require. Quick wire brush to get any loose rust off, then paint right over. Product chemically bonds to the rust.

Flat black Rustoleum has always worked well for me. As long as it is all black, same color looks good to me. I live in the salt belt and this method keeps axle components and springs looking new.
