My first 1911!

The FTE was not on every last bullet I shot but only the very last bullet in the very last clip I shot for the day so just one FTE in 250 continuous rounds. I hope it was just the gun getting dirty or a bad/weak shell. I did read on several forums that the early 9mm 1911 had magazine/ejection problems but that it has mostly been cleared up.

Most issues with a 9mm 1911 are magazine related. If you only had the one issue in 250 rounds, it is probably just normal break in. Make sure you keep it well lubricated and run it hard for 500-1000 rounds. If the problems become more frequent or you are still having issues after 1000 rounds, you can start looking harder to diagnose the issue. I don't worry about the occasional hiccup until I've put at least 1000 rounds through the gun.

I used to be a hard core 45 acp fan for personal defense or anything really. Now I carry double stack 9mm. I would really like to get a 9mm 1911 sometime. I have a Kimber Custom II in 45 acp that has probably 10k rounds through it, I've replaced the springs a couple times, over all its been a great gun and I have carried it a time or two, it's always a pleasure to shoot.

The 45 vs 9mm when it comes to personal defense can get to be a heated discussion on some gun forums. When it comes down to it I don't really want to get shot by either one of them. My first pistol (not counting my ruger 22/22mag revolver I got when I was a boy) was a ruger P95 that I got nearly 20 years ago. I didn't know alot about pistols back then but the gun was affordable and at the time I knew 9mm was used by a lot of law enforcement. I have since stayed with that caliber (I have 3 other 9mm) and feel comfortable with it as a daily carry round. I also carry a litlle ruger LCP .380 sometimes as well. I work outside for a living and I am in the woods a lot by myself so I have been carrying for years. I don't carry because of the critters I may run into, it is the people you may run into that is the biggest concern. I will probably never carry the Kimber, just always wanted a 1911 as well as range gun that was fun to shoot. Something tells me this won't be my last 1911 either.

Thanks for the advise, hope to get a few hundred more rounds shot through it soon. The 9mm clip is a pain to load compared to my buddys 45 clips and I can see where it can cause feeding problems. Kimber only gives you one clip so I will probably buy a wilson or another kimber clip sometime soon. I have an estimated 12k rounds through my ruger P95 and it is starting to give me problems and parts for it are not being produced any more, bummer.

When you buy more mags, I recommend Tripp mags. They are about as reliable as you can get for a 9mm 1911. Almost everyone I know uses them if they shoot a 9mm in competition. When you get to 40 and 45, I see a mix of these and Wilson.

If you need parts for the P95, look in Numrich

Yeah, I have and they do not have the parts either. Ruger has quit making parts for the P95 unless it is a part that is used in another series of guns. Great people to buy parts from though, had everything I needed to get my old Winchester 12g going again a few years back.

A couple other possible sources of obsolete parts are: Brownells and Western Gun Parts.

Good choice on the Kimber. I had a stainless Kimber Ultra Carry II chambered in 45acp, it was a very accurate, good quality gun, but it was a bit cumbersome as a concealed carry, so I ended up buying a Sig P938 9mm which conceals remarkably well. As a result I really didn't use the Kimber much anymore, so I traded it towards an FN Scar 17s.

As for a 9mm, I wouldn't worry at all, the ballistics on some of the 9mm self defense ammo has improved significantly.

Shot another 200 rounds yesterday evening (28 deg and snowing) and the gun did fine with no failures shooting blazer amo. The gun is now much easier to take apart than it was the first time. I was told that good quality 1911's are tight from the factory and take some breaking in and that is right. Another 500 rounds and hopefully it will have settled in nicely. I shot my old P95 and my brothers s&w 40 as well and this gun is the one we both wanted to shoot the most.

    • Are you going to take long trips in it?  If so, try out the seats in the various trims. For me the lower trim level seats were not comfortable.
    • I have a 2016 that I bought new and still own. I'm around 129,000 miles now. The biggest problem was a transmission failure about 2 years ago around 95000 miles. No warning, just failed while driving down a back road. A reman GM transmission installed and it's been fine ever since. A few other minor problems along the way. I am in no hurry to replace it. It's been paid off long ago and do plan on driving this as long as I can.   I will admit I am leery about all the additional electronics in the newer models and feel that it is just more potential problems. I think there's actually more than I would have wanted in this 2016 but so far so good. I think even if something major like lifter failure happened, it would still be cheaper to at worst, drop a new engine in than buy a new vehicle.
    • I’ve own several successful businesses. I’ve bought homes and lived in different states. I’d witness several generations buy homes and survive in different economic circumstances. You get awful sippy when people have different experiences than you do. You live a life. I’ve lived a life. It seems our experience has been different. You can point out generalized statistics. Some people learn how to thrive when the odds are against them. Living in different states does make a difference in a persons quality of life and economic outcomes and opportunities. That’s a fact Jack. It’s my truth, my life. Hard work and long hours the right environment made my families life easier. And yes moving to a different state increased the odds of that happening. Stats are generalized. People who thrive don’t make excuses. They beat the odds. Others get mad and point to those statistics. I guess that’s you. My post pointed out how you helped people beat the odds. Somehow your panties got in a wad. Go figure.
    • Good question, I don't remember for sure but I believe it was the HD. I will check and get back to you.
