SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Market Association, has sounded the alarm that the EPA is intending to restrict the modification of vehicle emissions systems for passenger cars converted to racecars. This could have grave implications for drag racing and other motorsports that use sports cars with modified engines. The EPA already feels that it has the right to restrict the conversion of on-road cars to race cars based on the Clean Air Act. Today, SEMA issued a press release warning that the EPA has recently added a comment to a proposal that clarifies that the group has that control.

 

SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting said in a statement, "This proposed regulation represents overreaching by the agency, runs contrary to the law and defies decades of racing activity where EPA has acknowledged and allowed conversion of vehicles. Congress did not intend the original Clean Air Act to extend to vehicles modified for racing and has re-enforced that intent on more than one occasion." SEMA intends to challenge the EPA on the point.

hate to say this, but I believe this all leads back to the events of DieselGate, the EPA is Pissed off, and they intend for someone to pay for VW's Illegal Activities, and unfortunately, the Weekend Racers are going to pay the price. (and more than likely, the Manufacturers will pass the price of this DRACONIAN Regulation to the Public through the service department; meaning charging HALF A F*YAY*KING GRAND for a SINGLE SOLITARY SENSOR Will become commonplace!)
