Took my truck in for a headliner issue.. and told them that my radiator has a small leak. Told the service guy. Gm has an updated radiator and thermostat. He said huh. I said trust me. Ur tech is going to put dye in the system and detect the leak where I marked with a sharpie. And then he's going to order the new updated radiator and thermostat that Gm has out. He still was confused.. he said he's never heard such a thing. And I laughed and said I know a lot of stuff that you dont... anyways 24 hrs later. He calls me and said hey you were absolutely rite. We ordered a new radiator and thermostat like you said.. so new headliner. And new updated radiator and thermostat. On my rig. I forgot the members name. But when I was searching radiator issues I read and found out all the info I needed. I'm sorry I forgot your name. But thank you for making me smarter than a service guy at a dealership. Cheers

How did you know there were issues, did you have smoke or overheating problems? I am getting ready to do a cross country trip this fall and want to make sure i look over all these common issues before i leave.

Yup. Has to do with the difference in ambient temp, the temp of the radiator and the humidity. We all see this from time to time.

I agree there is a lot of sharing on here...

 

At first I was concerned that my dealer service manager would not be open to hearing about issues and solutions from me, but he has been very receptive and uses it as another way to learn. On several issues (radio knob illumination, vibration, HVAC updates, and now the trailer towing platform recall) I gave him the background and, after checking, he pushed to get things done quickly. (I never had the vibration issue, but he asked me what I had been reading about it). Then later I would hear that he had others come in with the same issues and he knew what to do. With software, there are so many variables and vehicle models to keep up with, that it is hard to know everything. Even one of the techs said it was nice to narrow it down before he looked into some of the known issues.

I'm intrigued. Were you having an issue (leak?) and searched for solution, or did you see the thread and check afterwards?

 

This site is awesome. I trolled a few sites, and this is by far the best. And like Chuck said, with the right approach the dealer will be glad you helped pinpoint problem.

I noticed coolant smell from my front grill. Opened the hood. And seen small amount of coolant leaking on the driver side of the radiator. Then came on the website and started searching
