2014 crew cab 3.42 rear end 5.3, how would this truck do with a 28' 6400# dry weight travel trailer behind it?

It's made for it!

Mine is about 7200lbs loaded for camping. I'm happy how it tows. Not a diesel but no issues with braking and with the properly set up WD Hitch I'm totally happy. No air bags etc

Personally I believe the weight is no issue it's the wind resistance from my trailer, it's super tall

I tow a 28" travel trailer (7000 lbs) with the same setup and don't have too much of a problem. I use a weight distribution hitch, 10 ply tires and have a factory installed trailer brake controller. The truck pulls the trailer at 70 mph and will get 10 - 12 mpg.

Cool deal. Just have seen some folks trash talk them in the past so I was just trying to get some real opinions from people that have them. Not armchair internet...well you get what I mean. I plan on buying a blue ox weight distribution hitch and a prodigy 3 brake controller.

Seems allot of people think they need the 6.2 or Dmax for towing. The 5.3 does fine heck even the 4.3 does fine up to a point.

^ Jamin, what size and year is that formula!!! I'm saving up to buy a 27-30' boat like that. Love the birds, but they are carb and so expensive to find a clean old one. Anyway, how heavy/size is that boat and how does your truck do? What engine/gears/brake controller do you have?

That's allot of boat lol! I came from a Ford diesel down to a 1500. I got a new TT that was lighter and the truck was getting long in the tooth. I couldn't justify the cost of another diesel this time around. By all means you do need to buy the right truck for the job. My 5200 lb TT doesn't justify a 3/4 ton like it 9000lb dry TT did.

Power wise towing ~7500lb tt, will do pretty good. The biggest hurdle towing a tt with a 1500 is the payload. The 6400lb dry weight does not include options, even those that are "mandatory options". On average, it seems most add about 1klbs to the "dry weight" of a tt. So a 7500lb tt could have a tw of 900lbs-1125lbs (12-15% of the loaded trailer). There is a yellow sticker in the drivers door jamb stating "All passengers and cargo not to exceed XXXXlbs". This payload rating is the max the family, any accessories added to the truck (topper, bed liner, mud flaps, step bars, etc), any cargo in the bed (coolers, bikes, firewood, etc), the wdh, and the tt tw (travel trailer tongue weight) should weigh.

Chances are you will be ok as long as you don't try taking a ton of firewood, or load an atv in the bed.

I have read some good feedback on the Blue Ox. It is an interesting design. Even if the dealer sets the wdh up for you, it is to an empty trailer. Once loaded you will probably need to re-adjust the wdh. Make sure you receive all the paperwork for the wdh from the dealer.

Good luck!!!

I'm sure it would be fine for a short trip. You'd be squatting like crazy and super nose high which Looks silly but it's actually super unsafe. I only ever tow with the WDH set up. Even if you don't set it perfectly it's better than nothing. Only time I pull without them is backing into a tight spot
