I am a student at the University of Tennessee and I was just wondering if anyone lives around here. I hate taking my truck in for oil changes and stuff and need to change the diff. fluid. I was wondering if anyone lived around here and could show me how to do this. I would love to learn how to do the maintenance on my truck so I wouldn't have to pay some shop a lot of money to do something like that.

                              Thanks, Chris

Thanks, I knew there was something like that out there I just couldn't find it, guess I will get to work this weekend. Did you use the GM fluid?? If not what did you use??? :sideways:

Forgot to ask, did you take of the rear diff. cover and clean the rear cover magnet?? I heard that collects the shavings from the gears.

I used the recomended weight oil, but Valvoline Synthetic in the rear diff.  (The rear diff requires synthetic, the front doesn't)  I havn't got around to doing the front yet, but when I do, I'll use the recomended weight regular Valvoline gear oil.

There is no cover for the front, so you just drain it, refill it.

For the rear, I did take the cover off and cleaned it out really well.  I like the idea of looking everything over and any signs of possible problems.  Plus it gave me something to do.  :withstupid:   I cleaned the magnet off because it had a good bit of fine metal shavings on it, which looked to be normal to me, from what I've experienced in the past.  I also used the GM gasket.

Here's some info and pics, plus a little tip on measuring the right amount of fluid in the rear diff when refilling.  (at the bottom of the page.)

Thanks.

I sprayed some brake cleaner in there to clean everything with.  Leave the drain out when you spray it in that way all the junk will run out, what doesn't evaporate first.  The magnet is glues to the cover, so I just held it up and sprayed it down real good, then wiped everything down real good with a rag.  Check to make sure you don't leave any lint or strings in there from your rag, if you do that.

Cool, I bet you are ready to get out of here. I would love to see your truck in person if you have time. Just e-mail me if you do.

Not in Knoxvegas now, but lived there for 22 years, GO VOLS.  As a UT alumni, I had my truck worked on at a place called Auto Technicians on Gay St.  Paul and his wife are really cool, and Paul is usually more than accomodating about telling you what he's doing to the truck.  The number is 522-8972.  Good luck!

I will check that place out Monday. I need a place to go because my warranty just ran out and the check engine light just came on. Thanks for telling me about that place.
