2003 gmc sierra headlights not working

i was driving my truck this evening and after i got home i noticed that the headlights werent on so i checked it out and after i gave up for the night i shut off my truck and they turned on. but when my truck is on they wont work. i dont know if its a fuse or what but im at a loss
