What makes a Z71 a Z71? Is mine a Z71...?

Hello all! Noob to the forums. Here's the story;

So I was out for a smoke by my truck and just kind of staring at it... Feeling proud in the fact that I own a Z71, I noticed something... The Z71 sticker on the passenger side is uneven and points down a bit. So I walked to the other side and it's a little bit more straight, but still not as straight as it should be. And it got me thinking, is it really a Z71 and how can I tell? All of the stock info books and manuals are not in the truck and I can't seem to find out if it's a true Z71 just by googling the VIN (3GCEK33M79G149496)

So after googling for a good hour or so, I can't seem to find any visuals detailing what makes a Z71 a Z71. So my question stands...

Thanks in advance! Have a good independence day!

Look for the RPO codes in the glovebox if it is a Z71 it will be there listed

Z71 is a suspension option, primarily stiffer gas shock, decals, thicker air filter and skid plates. Content varies by year.

PS - Friend worked as parts manager at Chevy dealer, they sold 100's of these Z71 stickers and said a local used car lot bought a lot of them and stuck them on a truck just to make it sell better.

My 07 Z71 has a locking rear differential besides HD suspension, 17" mag rimsthat with LT trim are upgraded to 4 18" ones, tow hooks and other things.

I think that Z71 is mainly 4x4 option package for 1500

You can nicely ask the dealer service/parts people for a printout of the build sheet of your VIN.

If it were a Jeep you could ask for it on line.

Imagine the surprise when people think they got 4WD just because it had Z71 on it. Kinda like getting as SS back in the day and it had a 283 two bbl carb and no duals even. SS in some years was bucket seats and floor shift, even gasp a power glide trans and 6 cylinder.

Will it actually say "Z71" some where or will I need to call the dealer?

In the glove box, there is a white or silver sticker. it has a lot of 3 digit alpha-numeric codes. if Z71 is listed there, you have it

Z71 is NOT a 4x4 package, that's incorrect.

It's simply a suspension option, no big deal really. Some stickers, skid plates, locking rear differential (G80) and that's pretty much it. Add Appearance Package to Z71 and you got the color matched front end on Silverado those years.

Z71 is no different than standard 4x4 pickup, just different shocks and cheap skid plates really. They all take the same parts and sit at the same stance.

Good deal!

That's an old crooked dealership trick, slap on some stickers and sell it for more money. It happened a lot with the ZR2 optioned S10's years ago. Dealerships would put ZR2 decals no the vehicle to move them and get more money, sold to unknowing customers.

Good to hear you didn't get ripped off!
