High oil pressure after rebuild.

Just rebuilt early 80s 350. Motor was out of a boat so I wasn't quite sure where to post this. I primed the engine. When started for the first time the gauge jumped to 75 psi at 1000 rpm. Is this to high? Is there a way to drop the pressure besides the pump? There is no bypass installed.

In my opinion, that is normal on a cold, fresh, low-mile engine. I've seen 80 psi many times running 20w-50 in the fall.

Only way to really know what the pressure actually is, is to remove the sending unit, and hook up a good, mechanic-quality pressure gauge.

Mech gauge is what I'm using. I just want to fix the issue now (if it is in fact an issue) as it is on the run stand and much easier to remedy. Also I have not broken it in yet. Just fired it up it only ran 10 seconds tops then shut it down to check for leaks and problems.

I am using a mechanical gauge. Fresh build not even broke in yet. Started for 10 sec. Then shut it down to check for leaks and problems. This is the only thing I saw that caused some concern. This is my first complete rebuild.

Ahh, 10-4.

I still think you'll be fine. Pressure is the result of clearances in the engine - better too much (pressure) than too little. I think as it breaks in, the pressure is going to come down a bit.

Probably be fine. My 88 Sierra had the gauge maxed out after it's rebuild and it ran fine with no issues.

The main thing would be to verify oil is getting through the entire engine...long story, but I saw an engine built with the main bearings installed upside down and that engine had high oil pressure and burnt up after about an hour of run time.
