This is why you won't find just a grill insert!

I planned on painting the black part of my 2016 grill this weekend. I proceeded to take the front grill off my truck, really easy, and brought it inside to separate the chrome from the black plastic. The picture should explain everything. There are about 50 tabs connecting the chrome to the black part. Um, no thanks! This is a great example of major overkill. Now I see why they do not sell the inserts separately. Guess the search is on for a whole new grill.

Use tooth pics to hold the clips back. Maybe need to use a hair dryer to keep them breaking.

Toothpicks? As much as the response is appreciated, that's just funny. After an hour or more I only managed to get 3 tabs loose on one end of one row and I was using metal pry tools. I bent a couple of screwdrivers as well. There must be a very special tool for this job if it's even possible.

The heat suggestion is a good one. I'll need to remember that one.

I haven't tried to do it yet; however, on my Audi we have a similar issue with the chrome onset of the grill, about 36 clips. The square tooth pics will hold the plastic from clasping back over the lock on the other piece of plastic. Maybe it doesn't work here. The purpose again is just to keep it from locking back over itself.

Toothpicks work....on each tab you will find two black clips. Only one clip has a holding indentation. Pry that particular holding tab with a screwdriver and insert the half toothpick to hold open. After about 20-25 tabs just slide the chrome shell off. It is really easy.

I didn't understand about the toothpicks at first but I get it now. I have quite a few tools and I couldn't find one that would allow me to pry those clips out/apart. If I could get them apart I might would move forward with the paint option.
