I was 17 when I bought my Honda Sport 50. You know that was a long time ago. The shop mechanic told me to break in the engine the same was as Motoman says to do it

Load the engine and back off for a whiole then load it again. In other words break it in hard but remember to back it off occasionally. That s how I have always broken in all my vehicles since then and that includes my 03 2500 HD.

I'm for the hard breakin. I did change to Mobile one after 3000 miles. I guess time will tell who was right.

Break'em in like you drive'em! You have to generate heat in a engine to seat the rings. I've broke in several engines this way and if they are built correctly it will not harm them and they will run better in the long run. Just my 2 cents.

I have also heard that running an engine hard lengthens the area on the cylinder bore where rings are seated well.

Thats what I have always been told and I agree with it. I think its the reason that my car has lived as long as it has with me driving it. Mom drove the hell out of it when it was new, and now I drive the hell out of it. So far I've added about 50,000 miles on it, and it had 300,000 when I got it.

Alot of guys do this with their outboard motors on bass boats... My dad is a sponsored bass fisherman, and gets a new boat every year... Ive been with him on several occasions breaking in a motor... Long and hard at several different powerband settings.

My thinking is that it cant hurt anything... everything is mechanically sound enough to take it, and rings are gonna seat no matter what... let one idle for an hour and rings are gonna be seatin for petes sake. Ive heard several race engine builders including guys at HP performance tell me that.

Rods and other internals will stretch (ultra minutely but still...) and result in better (not significant maybe) power gains.

All that aside though I still think that website is retarded. Goofy smiley guy isnt a master engine builder and hasnt discovered anything either.

Mobile 1....yeah. Actually, my dealer advertises that they do this to all the vehicles they sell, during the 3,000 mile free oil change. That's about the only thing they do right.

I'd love to know the actual final prepping of a motor before it leaves the factory for installation. I'm sure each manufacturer is different. I honestly don't think motors are "green" anymore and that some sort of basic break-in is done to them, just enough to seat everything and to insure that tolerances are within guide so the poor motor, abused by Joe Schmoe, will last through the warranty period.

Anyway, I recall my first new muscle car, a 1970 383 Magnum Dodge Challenger. Yup, it was new. Recently, I saw it in the movie trailer for the new Fast/Furious film---a glimpse. It is a pony car. The manual for the Challenger recommended that in regards to break-in, "Occasional full-throttle acceleration below 80 mph is most beneficial." And it also stated, "Steady speeds above 50 mph are not recommended. Vary the acceleration."

HEH, heaven-forbid for me back then to ignore that manual. Geeze, wish I could go back in time and bring that heck-uv-a-car back to this time in my life.

My only question is how did he break in 300 engines in his young life? Other than that, I agree with him. The factory system has never made any sense to me. I do my first oil change at 500 miles and then run it like I'm going to be driving it, maybe harder.
