Switching from Valvoline SynPower to M1 - Can it cause leaks/oil usage

I am thinking about switching from Valvoline SynPower to Mobil1 5W-30. I was using Pennzoil Platinum but was getting the cold start tick so I wanted to try a different oil to see if it helped quiet the tick.

Since using the Valvoline for about 3 weeks, I've gotten the cold start tick twice and it's been in the 60's. I thought about switching to Mobil 1 to see if it helps but I have read that it's on the thinner side of the 5W-30's and can cause leaks. Is there any truth to that or should I switch with confidence?

When I had my '98 I put 5W-30 in it and I switched from Quaker State to Mobil and never had a leak with either oil. Those people that had a leak probably had a minor leak that a thicker oil might not get through. At least if it does leak it's showing where a leak would have been in the near future with the other oil. Also the #s mean the viscosity at cold and then operating temps, so I doubt Mobil 1 is thinner than other 5W-30.

I switched to Mobile 1 with about 75k on the clock and have 95k now and I have no leaks.

I guess I'm more worried about burning oil since it seemed to drink it the last time I used M1.

 

I'll probably change it in the next week or two when I have time.

Switching to Mobil 1 I think you will still get the tick. It seems that from what I have read on here and a few other forums that the Mobil 1 users have noticed it more than other brands.

 

As for leaks you shouldn't have any problems since you have been taking care of your ride running a quality oil all along.
