Sean Neilan Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 Buying a couple kayaks this spring and would prefer not to have them hanging out the back of the bed. Is there a good rack that is easy to install and remove that anyone would recommend? I only want to have it on when I'm transporting the kayaks and remove it when I'm done.
truckguy82 Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 it can be a bed extender at bed height, or if you flip it around it's roof height so you can strap something long to your roof. I use it for long ladders. http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorcycle/cargo/truck-bed-extender-69650.html

I don't mind them being over the roof just don't want them ON the roof

I'm in the same boat as you, but own a 169 Old Town canoe. I've thought about building a rack out of wood, but also trying to figure out my options for a pre-built system.

kkmitchell5 Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 How do you find the plastic knobs? Are they easy to adjust? I wouldn't want to take it off and on every weekend. If you had a allen ratchet you could get it off or in 10-15 minutes. The plastic knobs to adjust it are great super simple, easy and effective. Adjusting with no weight is a breeze. I keep a roof top tent on it that is 150 lbs and to adjust with it on is tough with one person.
Back in a Bowtie Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 use the harbor freight thing... put the kayaks in with one end in the front corner of the bed close to the cab (secured to front tie downs) then secure to the harbor freight thing. Done.

Back in a Bowtie Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 What if he doesn't want to put the kayak in the bed? just said he wants the tailgate up so that would solve the problem.
Sean Neilan Posted December 2, 2016 Author Posted December 2, 2016 I'm mostly don't want to have 5+ feet of kayak sticking out the back. I'm in Long Island, space is a premium.
