6.2 get a beefier sway bar maybe?

 

Heavier axle assembly?

 

Stiffer springs?

 

Just throwing it out there

Does the 14 and 17 have the same size wheels? 18 inch tires will ride better than 20 inch because of more sidewall flex.

'17 5.3 slt all-terrain crew cab - has trailer brake controller

'14 6.2 slt all-terrain double cab - no trailer brake controller

Same 20" wheels with goodyear sr-a's at 33-34 psi

 

'14 leans slightly less turns and can't absorb a pothole for the life of it

'17 leans slightly more in turns, absorbs potholes much better.

My 14 would bottom out in the front end with the stock ranchos. I replaced all four ranchos with stock black shocks which are standard on a regular 4x4. They rode better but still would bottom out. I replaces the front only with Bilstein 5100s on the 3rd height setting. The ride is firm but good and no more bottoming out. And no more out of control bouncing at highway speeds. The ride is still not like I want it but think It would be better with 18 inch tires. The Bilsteins seem to settle in after a few months and are not as firm as when installed. I keep my michelin m/s2 air @ 32 cold psi per the door sticker.

We're the control arms the same?

I've heard that the aluminum control arms may rebound faster because they are lighter. Don't know if there's any truth to that, but that may have been a difference between the two trucks.

 

I will say I had a loaner with with aluminum control arms, Z71/rancho and it was night and day difference, better, softer than my nht max tow with steel control arms and no rancho shocks, however that's a lot more differences.

Pics are of the factory Ranchos on my 2014 SLT at approx 50,000 miles. I think they were actually bad at around 25,000 miles, not impressed by the Ranchos!. Put on some Gabriel Ultras on the back (20 bucks each delivered) rode much better never messed with front ones and traded the truck.post-127028-0-47197300-1460675416_thumb.jpg

 

New truck has the MRC we will see how that holds up. I have heard that a replacement Magnetic Ride Control shock is like 600 bucks each LOL

I hear ya, but my problem is I just drove a truck with the ranchos and it wasn't all that bad at taking a bump. It felt like a normal truck should feel. My '14 feels like a sledgehammer hit the truck every time I hot a pothole.

Check and confirm the "suspension" package on the build sheet or sticker are the same. I also remember seeing on here the '16+ trucks have a different part # rear leaf spring so it could be they changed the front coils also? Not unrealistic to see some changes on a completely new platform.... If the build suspension codes are identical, tires are the same etc then either your ranchos are wore out or GM changed something. Simple as that. Think of how many iOS updates your iphone has had since 2014...... :) ! And as other above mentioned I've seen our trucks with aluminum control arms and stamped steel. Mine are aluminum, my Superintendent has the same truck as me, both are 14's but his is a Z71 and he has steel control arms. Aluminum is the way to go my friend.

I was curious to see if the MRC shocks were actually 600 each as someone had told me but it looks like they are around 340 on the GM parts direct site at the present time and as the technology becomes more commonplace that price will probably come down more in the next few years.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
