Hydraulic Lifter noise 5.3

When I cold start my truck (2015 silverado 5.3) the motor makes a loud clacking noise for just a second as it turns over. You can clearly hear the noise. It is literally as the engine just cranks over. Someone told me it its the hydraulic lifters and its normal. Just want to make sure.

Its probably just the direct injection fuel pump. After the truck sits for a few hours there can be some cavitation in the pump and it makes a rattling or "clacking" noise. I think there is something in the owners manual about it somewhere. Haven't read the thing myself.lol "Operating As Designed" as GM would say.

Is it like a "rasp" noise for just a second upon startup up?

 

If so GM says that's normal; it's air that had entered the oil pump from normal drain back.

 

They say that's normal, and won't hurt anything, but we shall see in the long run if people start having oil pump isues, hopefully all will be fine, fingers crossed.

Yes it is like a raspy sound. I am continuing to research it and apparently they all do it. Like you guys are saying, something with the oil pump.

Oil Pump and DI Pump rap is normal.
