Custom 3rd brake cover

On a couple of my previous trucks, I made custom covers for the 3rd brake lights by molding fiberglass over the light. I decided to do the same for my 2016.

Made this for my 2008.

I started by wrapping the light in aluminum foil. The foil got torn on the sharp corners so I taped over them and added another layer of foil.

I did 3 layers of fiberglass cloth with resin over each layer and let it sit for a couple hours to cure.

This is after initial trimming and sanding. I'm still undecided on what I want the design of the cut-outs to be.

Finished trimming the edges and cut out where the lights are. It's now ready for my painter.

Pretty cool, nice work! You should try some for the tail lights.

Thanks. Thought has crossed my mind.

The wife saw it and now wants one for her 2017 Colorado. For whatever reason, GM made the light much larger on the smaller trucks.

I wonder if anybody has modeled this sort of thing so I might be able to add my own design and 3d print it.

Couldn't you just do this with some thick mil vinyl? I haven't worked with vinyl in over a decade but I am pretty sure we had some stuff that was thick enough to block the extra light.

I'm pretty comfortable with SOLIDWORKS, but all those curves and compound curves... It's hard to get it to fit JUST right.

I have access to a faro arm that has a scanner on it, but we didn't pay for the software to convert to a solid model.
