Strange problem

This ground problem should actually be a recall because the steering wheel kicking out of your hands is life threatening.

It isn't a design problem it's an assembly problem. For all we know the guy on the assembly line may have even taken it upon himself to tuck the sound dampening material under the ground tab to keep it from rattling not thinking of the possible implications down the road.

I already filled out my form with them. Interstate driving and no steering was not that fun.

This is the action, along with visiting your dealer, video recording, and retaining work orders for your records.

 

You must notify the, NHTSA, and the manufacture, either through telephone, registered mail, or email of your problem! Then you have legally full filled your obligation in law to "notify of a safety problem" with their product. It is now up to them to act on this claim!

 

I preffer using registered mail, and retaining a copy of their acceptance signature of letter.

So got the call to pick my truck up today. They said it was that G218 causing the problem. He said the tech told him there were two areas where he could tell it had arched to. Fingers crossed that was the cause of the problems.

Maybe it should be mandatory for GM techs to be members of this forum, they would waste a lot less time chasing problems.

That would be great but they'd loose way to much money on non warranty work that way. So I don't see it happening

Electrical connections and their grounding fasteners are considered critical safety related grounds nowadays. Considering the amount of dependency placed on them, they should all be torque to yield using a "DC" Direct Current tool. What this tool would do is count usage, and final torque! This would guarantee a completed good final torque of this grounding fastener to body. Grounding bolts also need to be of the best quality, normally considered "earth bolts". They "earth bolts" conduct the best and resist slow down oxidation of metal.

 

These grounding problems are of a "factory quality" issue and GM better wake up as they are also a very serious safety related issue that can cause loss of steering control and possibly resulting in deaths occouring.

 

GM needs to identifiy the issues and put in place a countermeasure to stop these safety outflow from their factories.

Owners need to report these safety issues to the NHSTA so a recall can force an inspection order!

They could also put a little tack weld on the ground tab.

My 97' K1500 Sierra steering wheel used to jerk violently out of my hands when making a nice sweeping turn at about 45 mph. Back in the day, there were thousands of complaints regarding this serious safety issue on the NHTSA website. It was related to the VSS (variable speed steering) introduced in 97'. Not one recall or TSB was ever issued by GM. All I can assume is GM paid them off handsomely to bury it as it affected hundreds of thousands of 97' through 99' model trucks and vans. GM's stance seems to be, "if injuries or deaths are held to a minimum it is simply more cost effective to settle it out of court".
