2017 6.2 w/8 speed: I thought my trans went out today...

So it's going to the dealership in the morning to find out what's wrong. The truck is a 2017 Ltz Z71 6.2 w/8 speed. Only has 7500 miles. I was stopped at a red light waiting to make a right turn and when I did the only thing moving was my rpms. I thought my truck somehow ended up in neutral but it wasn't. Let off the gas and tried it again, same thing. Rpms just went up to 4k. After the 3rd try I guess it went into a gear. Not really sure which one but it hit so hard it made the whole truck shake. I expected to see a puddle of trans fluid behind be after it started moving. It had to either be 1st or 2nd gear, but it wouldn't shift out of it. I had to limp it at 4k rpm to a parking lot. Turned the truck off, waited about 10 mins, and started it again. Now it got me home, but the 1st couple of gears shifts really hard. I scanned it with torque once I got it home and there's 2 codes. P0747 and P0700. I've attached a pic with the details. I'll keep everyone posted on what the service dept says. Hopefully it's a quick fix or that they have a new trans in stock. I need my truck this weekend to go out of town.post-54656-148885709636_thumb.png

A new transmission is in your future

I'll just have to wait and see.

Kind of a rant but i think this is a bunch of BS. So I took the truck to the dealership yesterday morning. The service manager comes out and I tell him what happened. He tells me that they only had 2 transmission guys and they both just quit the day before. He said he's sorry but I have to take my truck to another dealer. No one there will even look at the truck if it's a trans related problem. So I take it to a different dealership. Explain it to them and they said they might be able to get to it today. They ask if I'll leave it and I agree. Then they ask if I have a ride home. I said I needed a rental and they tell me that they are out and that I needed to schedule a rental 2 days prior. I tell them that I didn't schedule my truck to screw up 2 days prior. They didn't seem to like that comment. Either way they offered a shuttle service to give me a ride home. They also said they'll call as soon as a rental becomes available. Well they called me a 5pm and said the truck hadn't even been looked at yet but it's next in line for tomorrow.

Sounds like both dealership are being honest and up front with you.

I would prefer that, than a different mechanic that doesn't know transmissions tell me nothing's wrong with it, and then break down on your trip. Also the current dealership is trying to get you in, they have customers who already scheduled ahead of you..... Just my take on the current situation.

I understand that. I just have trouble believing that a dealership as big as Classic doesn't have a trans mechanic. The other dealer is significantly smaller and I'm fine with them taking their time. I talked to the service adviser after he talked to the trans mechanic. He said that he was aware of the issues with the 8 speed but most was tune related. He said he has not heard of one doing what mine had done.

I'm wondering how long it will be before my 2017 cc with 8 speed does the same thing. It has 3700 miles and shifts great some days and horrible on others. It doesn't make sense. This is my first pickup of any brand but will definitely be my last gm vehicle. I wish I would have done more research before I bought it. I will have to keep it for 3 more years until I'm ahead on it. At least I'll have warranty until then. I'm scared to own this thing past warranty expiration.

huntr1117, please make sure your dealer is aware of service bulletin 16-NA-404, it was published in December 2016 and describes reprogramming the TCM for P0747 (P0700 is just the TCM telling the ECM turn turn on the MIL). Reprogramming should resolve the P0747.

I told them about that service bulletin when I dropped it off. I asked them again about it when I called them earlier today. As of now, they are still diagnosing the problem. Thanks for the heads up though.

If they are unsure have them call Technical Assistance Center. There's a good liklihood that the reflash will fix the problem. Keep in mind after the reflash the dealer should run service fast learn and perform the clutch adapt procedure before giving the truck back to you.

That's what I'm hoping they'll do. I'd like to have my truck back to take it out of town tomorrow. I'm fine with them taking their time though. I'm just concerned that when it did slam into gear that it may have caused damage to the hard parts. I haven't had a trans hit that hard even in any of my cars that had built transmissions.

So you brought your truck in that day and expected/hoped them to look at it and have a rental sitting waiting for you.... Christ man.

Them even doing it the next day without an appointment is really good of them honestly. And at our shop, we need a week before you'd get a car. There is only so many to give out, you can't expect just to show up and get one. Geez.

And yes we only have one trans guy at our shop and there are 20 mechanical techs on hand. That's all he does. The new transmissions are extremely complicated, he knows exactly what he's doing vs a general tech that doesn't work on them.

It seems like both dealers were honest and hopefully it's a easy fix but man, you have to have realistic expectations.

Seriously. "Realistic expectations" I was going off of what the service adviser told me. He said that they should be able to look at it today and that hopefully it's just a programming issue. As far as the rental, anytime I've gone to classic for any warranty work that would put me out of a vehicle they had a rental available. Without calling in advance. My expectations are that they'll keep me notified on what's going on with my truck. I know trans are a pain to work on/diagnosis issues with. Especially the new transmissions. That's why I only build motors and have someone else build transmissions.

    • You could try a used 1, they used that engine in the Astro vans, Plenty of them in the boneyard. Look for a wrecked or rotted 1 so the chance that it was scrapped for that reason and not a mechanical issue will be greater

Hoping for some advice on what I should be looking at.
    • The truck is a 1995 Chevrolet S10 Blazer, 4.3 VIN "W" engine. :cracks knuckles:   On a whim - because I needed a headache - this truck was for sale so I stopped to take a look. Doesn't run. Well, it does, but barely. Long crank, choppy idle, bad misfire(s), it REEKS of fuel. I can DO this..I'm thinking. Diamond in the rough. One owner until last year. A young guy is selling it, he bought it 6 months ago. It stranded him more than once, he's got a newborn. It was in the shop 10 days ago and he "thinks" they said it needs a new fuel injection system. He can't put any more money into it, needs it gone. I was thinking of upgrading my Macbook, which is a total want, not a need. For less than the price of a new laptop I can have fun for months tinkering on this truck and enjoying it. I'm taking this truck home. The guy was beyond thrilled, his wife was there, she thanked me profusely, I could tell they were hurting. They seemed like good people in a bind.   Some parts, a wash, maybe a set of tires, and I can have a few months of fun and then turn it for beer money (or the next project).   Sure enough, there's a work order from a shop last week in the INCHES of paperwork on this truck dating back to when the first owner bought it. They put a new distributor in it, fuel injection work describes basically opening the plenum and putting it back together. He said he couldn't afford any more work so he had them button it up and that's when he put it up for sale.   I'm not well versed in 4.3. I did discover 1995 uses the 1992-1995 SCPI "Spider" injector which is riddled with issues from splitting lines, clogged or cracked poppet valves and plastic spider legs that crumble over time. Cool. I'll just order me a ne---. Oh, the auto parts store doesn't have it? Rock Auto doesn't have it. eBay? $$$$$$ for used. These are UNAVAILABLE period end of story unless you know "a guy" who's still got one in a box somewhere.   Can't upgrade to the '96-'04 injector, it's a different plenum, wiring/pinout and sensor config.   There are a few kinda "know a guy" -guy rebuild services for these injectors out there for about $350. Okay, Okay... I'd like to know if anyone has used them? Anyone got a lead on these crappy 92-95 spiders?   I also don't want to send MY spider to Narnia and back without knowing if that's truly the problem. I guess I'll need to pull apart the plenum and do some digging.   I was also thrown for a loop. This 1995 model year truck has an OBD-II connector. The interface is decidedly not OBD-II. I can read and reset trouble codes and view live data, but there's not a lot of data. Like misfire count and on what cylinder, that's not there. It's OBD-1.5.   Nothing is ever easy. Now it makes sense why this guy wanted to disappear this thing for cheap. I'm guessing the shop told him the injector is toast, the part is unobtainable and they're not going to sort sending the thing to a rando offering rebuild service on craigslist, and the kid likely can't be without a working car for 3 weeks even if they'd facilitate that.   Experience with these early SCPI's? Stories? Things to check? Sympathy? (..Nah...)   This can sit until I sort it. But I haven't had a problem with a vehicle I couldn't easily solve in a long time.
