Can I plow with a Denali 2016 GMC 2500 HD, does not have a snow prep p

Recommended Posts

I am looking at buying a 2016 GMC 2500HD Denali Crew Cab short bed pickup, 6.0 gas.

The truck DOES NOT have the snow plow prep package from the factory, I talked to my plow installer and he said 50/50 chance I will have electrical issues with the truck without the snow plow prep package.

Has anyone experienced any issues with this?

The truck only comes with a 150amp alternator also.

Thank you,

Brian

People do it all the time however, I would try to find one with plow prep. Your biggest problem is if you plan on running a big or heavy plow, you will need quite a bit of ballast to counteract your payload overloading up front. There is a 400-1000lbs difference in front gross axle weight rating without plow prep depending on cab and engine choice.

Does the truck you are looking at have a sunroof? If so that's why no plow prep.

I plow with a 1500 with no plow prep package. I do so at my own risk. I have had no electrical issues.

If you just want a straight blade to plow your own driveway, go for it. you'll be fine. But if you want a heavy V-blade and plan to do commercial work, then you have the wrong truck. You can always get a proper sized (& weight) blade that won't overload your truck, but likely it won't cut it for you to do serious work.

Also plowing with a Crew cab is like trying to turn a yacht around, so if you go for it you better have some nice wide open lots to plow, aka not residential.

Sidebar - if you look at all the other locals with plows running around, tons of them are overloaded. You can do that as you wish, but buying a brand new truck and overloading it without the plow prep will CERTAINLY void the warranty on any drive, suspension or frame parts you damage plowing.

Thanks for the info guys.

Yes the truck has a sunroof, I will be putting a Western 8'6" or a Western wideout on it. This would be used for commercial and residential but more of a backup truck. I could always do the leveling kit to raise up the front end. Have any of you ever done that?

The deal on the truck is so good I would hate to pass it up, I was originally looking for a 3500 HD.

I hope the alternator will be large enough in the truck.

Thanks guys

8"6 or a Wideout? Might want to find a prep truck....

I looked at adding a leveling kit, but after I got my truck & plow set up I realized mine did not sag nearly as bad as my old 1998. since mine doesn't have torsion bars to adjust, I added timbrens to the front. my truck barely lowers 1" when I lift my plow. but my plow is sized property for my truck and only weights 400#.

A Leveling kit doesn't help or improve your suspension, it only gives you more ground clearance.

You could swap for a larger alternator if that is your limiting factor.

You are free to buy it and do whatever you want to your truck. You are just taking more risks, and overusing a truck that isn't designed for that use will cause more issues down the road.

Go with snow plow prep.. Especially with that big of blade and your commercial. Sure you'll save a few bucks now. But it'll bite you in the butt down the road$$$.

Thats a big plow, I would look for a truck with the prep package. I made this mistake on my last truck which was a Dodge 2500. The alternator couldn't handle the load...and I was just plowing my long driveway. I would constantly watch the volts drop to zero. Plus the front suspension could not handle the weight. I currently run GMC 2500 Double Cab with the plow package and dual batteries hooked up to a 8.2 Boss VTX V Plow. Night and day over the dodge and 7.6 straight blade. The GMC barley knows the plow is on. In the long run I think you will be happier with the Prep package. Also ask about warranty on a truck with a plow and no prep package...they may deny warranty work if they determine the extra load caused the issue. I have the GM extended warranty and had to pay extra due to the plow being installed
