10W 30

Anybody switch to 10W 30? Instead of 5W30? I was tired of my morning rattle - first few seconds on cold startup seemed to be too loud- so at 75k miles put some 10W 30 in there. Seems quieter. Anybody else tried this?

I have a 2010 GMC Sierra with the 5.3L. I run Mobil 1 10W-30 with the Lucas Pure Synthetic oil stabilizer. Lucas seems to keep it quiet, even on cold starts.

All you are doing with Lucas is diluting Mobil 1. Ditch the Lucas, its snake oil.

Mike,

I completely respect your opinion, now I've never had any testing done on the oil, I do feel it helps keep the oil adhered to the top of the rocker arms, valve guides/etc. I wouldn't think it would dilute the oil, however testing it would tell us for sure.

Lucas Oil Stabilizer (LOS) thickens whatever oil it is added to. The same way STP oil treatment used to in the old days. I remember having to heat that STP oil treatment before it would pour from the can in the winter.

I consider Ol 'Cowpie' on this forum to be an oil expert, and here is what he posted on the subject earlier this year:

Why would anyone want to put Lucas Oil Snot in their engine. It has been analyzed by many folks and shown to be nothing but an oil viscosity thickener. The equivalent of a 150w base oil with no beneficial additives of any kind. By adding it to your engine oil volume, you are diluting the beneficial additives that a good motor oil needs to protect the engine. Many folks think of only synthetic, blend, or conventional, but overlook that up to 20% of any motor oil is additive package of detergents, anti friction modifiers, extreme pressure modifiers, crankcase acid protection, oxidation protection, nitration protection from fuel dilution, and other stuff to keep particulates from bonding to form larger particulates and keeping that stuff in suspension so the filter can remove it.

If you want a higher viscosity oil, then buy one! Worried about fuel dilution then go with a XXw30 oil instead of XXw20. Don't be fooled by one of those goofy hand crank things that are prevalent on many parts store counters. They are not an internal combustion engine.
