Should I get the 6.2 or stick with the 5.3?

Also guys, I do know the guy that had it. He traded it in and got a brand new 2017 GMC Denali 6.2L CC also. He owns a body shop. So, I know it's been taken care of. They're asking $34 for it

One other aspect that hasn't been mentioned.. comparing 5.3 with the 8 speed and the 6.2.. the 5.3 is downright annoying how it is constantly hunting for the right gear. 6.2 can handle quite a bit more variation in grade, moderate acceleration and bucking wind without jumping up and down in the gears.

I went with the 5.3/8 speed in my 2017 Sierra crew cab, I had a 2015 SS sedan with a 6.2l before that. The 5.3 has more than enough power for a truck, and I haven't notice mines hunting for gears at all. The 6.2 will cost you more in fuel as it requires premium fuel, even though it probally gets similar mpg as the 5.3.

If you can't afford what you really want, I'd suggest holding off and maybe saving up a bit more or keep looking for the right deal. Too many times I have settled for a vehicle, only to regret it didn't have this or that. Sure, some items I added after the fact but probably costed me way more than if I got it up front. And some things you can't add on after (not without spending a fortune) and you regret not having it.

I don't think you need a 6.2 for your application, but I have a 5.3 and love it. Again, if you really want it, I wouldn't settle for your second choice. You'll regret it.

Both actually. But probably the features tbh

The features you notice every single day and the lack of something will drive you mad. The difference in power will annoy you once every few weeks in some sort of passing maneuver or stoplight race. But who cares your in a truck not a sports car.

Coming from someone who has a 5.3 I love it. Do I wish sometimes I had a 6.2? Of course I'd love one. But I got a great deal on my 5.3, it's fully loaded and every day I drive it I'm comfortable. My hands are toasty on the heated steering wheel, my ass is surrounded by lovely GM plastic leather, my headlights are brilliant bright LEDs and my warranty will outlast my payments.

Well, I went to two different GM dealers a Chevy/Cadillac dealer and a GMC dealer. They both had 6.2Ls on the lot, also told me the deal I'm getting is pretty good.

The Chevy dealer said, so your truck is an 08 and your getting one that's a 14 model. That's 6 years newer, has everything you want in it, besides the sunroof, just Bc of my gf. (She loves my Tundra that has a sunroof & the rest window that rows all the way down). & your only paying couple dollars more on your payment? He told me that I should jump on it.

They had one exactly the same model there but it was a 2015 and it just had the 5.3, had around 36k miles and they was wanting more for it.

So, I don't think it's too bad of a deal. Yeah, I could wait and stuff. But from what I've seen and stuff. I'm making a good decision, imo.

I had a 2015 5.3 and now have a 2016 6.2 and will never go back, fuel milage is the same if not better and the power is night and day different, but I pull a trailer. The price of fuel is very little differance and if you want you can run mid grade, they just recomend premium.

Do not be a payment shopper. That is a dealership's wet dream. Negotiate the sale price of the truck and then the trade in price of your truck. Don't even tell them you have a trade in until after you negotiate the price of the truck you wish to buy.

If your paying the same price for a brand new 5.3 vs. a 2014 6.2 the benefits arent worth it. They are if you are paying only 2 grand for the upgrade. By doing it this way you're paying up to 10 grand for the upgrade factoring in depreciation. Mind you you will arguably have a more comfortable interior. I have a 6.2, i bought it because i was in the market for a new SLT, so the 65hp jump was justifiable for 2k, after all they talked me out of a 6.2 in 2010. I wont go back to a 5.3, but the new generation are worlds snappier than 2010. If you dont need the power per say, i would go with the new truck.

I was on my way to go out to eat last night & this Jeep was right beside me in the right lane & several cars behind him. So, I just hit the gas to the floor and this thing slingshot right passed them. Put a big smile on my face! Lol

Jeep Wrangler? No offense but that's like taking candy from a baby. A Prius could beat a wrangler.

I had to get off at an exit, that's what I'm talking about. I'm not use to a vehicle like this, now my G8 GT I use to have was like this. Lol

The average person is going to be happy with the 5.3. I had the 5.3 in a 04 Z71 and it was ok,,,,,just ok. When towing anything, it was NOT ok. The 5.3 never gave me a problem, but it just did not have the power to tow without a struggle. I am talking light towing, as in a car trailer towing situations. Granted the newer 5.3's have more HP than mine did. But, headers, programmer, and cold air still just wasnt enough that it was not struggling while towing a car. I do have to say, I am old school big block from waaaay back. The 6.2 is nght and day comparison to the 5.3. I love mine, and have not one regret about getting the 6.2. If you like to peal down and get up and go.....6.2!! Now with all that said, if you don't plan on ever towing except maybe the little utility trailer to go get mulch at your local lawn and garden store...aka, lowes or home depot, then the 5.3 will be fine and you will be totally happy with the power of the 5.3.

Now I did have the 5.3L in my old truck, '07 GMT-900 that is. It was okay, my current truck an 08 Tundra CM 5.7L only gets about 275-310 on a full tank of gas. So far I've drove over 320 miles on this truck & I still have a quarter tank of gas yet. Pretty impressive with this 6.2

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
