Is a Custom Tune worth it?

What would I gain by doing a Custom Tune on a 2003 GMC Sierra 2500 HD? I'm new to all this so I'm very curious if I'd notice a big difference in performance and handling or mpg's. The truck is all stock.

If it's a smart move who would you recommend or how would you recommend doing it?

I had a custom EFI live tune done on my truck. It might have increased performance a little, but not noticeable.

The transmission shifts much nicer now though, that was definitely a plus

I just had a mail order tune from black bear performance on my 04 2500HD 6.0. No difference in mpg that I noticed, but how and when the transmission shifts is definitely better. That alone was worth it. Id do it again.

What type did you do? Did you use the cable or just order the basic tune? I've contacted them and trying to decide if I should go with him or DiabLew or a Custom Tune from a guy in the Detroit area for $450.

I agree, it was worth it just for the way the tranny shifts now. I'm not sure exactly what the guy did, but he said something like he messed with 15% of the torque management. But he said something like he didn't just remove the 15%, he moved around only 15% so that it interacts differently with the rpm/power curve. It shifts much better than before.

My dad has a stock e4od in his 7.3 and it's night and day compared to my tuned stock 4l80. The 4l80e is a fantastic transmisison

Was your custom EFI Tune done by mail with someone or did you do it at a local shop?

I just done the typical mail tune. They sent me a tuned ECM, I sent them back mine as a core. No issues at all.
