Will a Tune fix my issues?

Before I dump some money into a tune, I was hoping some of you all that are more knowledgeable than me can answer my question.

Currently have truck in my signature, 2014 with about 55k miles on, 2.5 level in front and BFG K02's on it. all else stock. I have lots of surging on the highway, especially form V4 to V8, and V8 to V4, anywhere from 250 to 500 RPM jump and surges the truck with every switch. drives me absolutely insane! Also seem to have it where the torque converter will engage and disengage on the highway a lot, or will experience tons of downshifting with the slightest uphill.

Around town, it cant seem to find the right gear to safe its life, will either forget to upshift and sit at crazy high rpms for ever and slam into the next gear, or when coasting to a red light will just down shift hard and rev way up. When coming to a yield, ill coast up to it, roll slowly and try to accelerate and will just sit there dumbfounded and will then find 1st or 2nd and spin my tires.

Wondering if I get a tune from Blackbear ( had it on my suburban), if that will solve some of these issues? I know I can turn off AFM which might solve some of the surging, but wondering about the torque converter locking and unlocking all the time.

Kinda at the end of my rope with this truck, was in the dealership over 70 days in the past 1.5 years but it's just about paid off. If a tune will fix these things, id rather put a little into it than going out and buying another.

Just a couple things to try if you haven't, the transmission is self learning so try resetting that, another option that some people do is go into manual and leave it in 5, the last one which I do sometimes is turn on tow haul mode, can't see your signature as I'm on the mobile app but if it's changed from oem then sometimes the transmission gets confused from the previous shifting points learned before so a reset is your best bet

Maybe not the surging RPMs, but the engine/transmission could re-learn after a tune.

I've got the BBP tune and it definitely helps with the upshift/crazy high RPMs and slamming into the next gear.

I just got an update on the TCM tune and it's night and day difference. Truck is more responsive to the amount of pedal applied and doesn't search for gears.

Size of K02? Tune could fix your speedo as well for larger tires.

Thanks for the quick replies so far guys!

the size of tires i got are 275/60/r20. They are slightly taller than stock and thought that could be messing with shift points, but they are only a few % taller, I believe like 3% within spec.

I have a 2015 1500 with the 5.3 only 17,000 miles on it and I have hated the AFM since I bought it brand new. My truck drove like a 300,000 mile truck with bad u-joints so I installed a K&N cold air take, Flowmaster exhaust, and a Superchip tuner and set the tune to performance and disabled the AFM now it runs and shifts like a totally different vehicle I love this truck now

i had a 2015 Denali with the 6.2 and 8 speed tranny and it was doing the same thing. On a perfectly flat road whether in V4 or V8 the Rpms would slowly bounce about 300 rpms give or take. I had my truck in the shop more then i drove it, many tranny re learns and other things.. There is a Bulletin somewhere about the Torque Converter on those trucks. That is usually what the problem is, it isn't locking ever or it is slipping etc.. not sure if u have the 8 speed and 6.2 but whether you do or not maybe try asking the dealership to check yours or hook to there computer and drive it, they can see if it is locking or not. i ended up trading mine in because i couldnt deal with the problem and was sick of driving loaner vehicles. My new 2017 Denali with same motor and tranny is buttery smooth and it locks like it is supposed too on highway. Hopefully this helps you, sorry it was such a long post haha.. Good luck.

How does one reset the transmission or relearn it?

Dealership can do it or I have "heard" you just remove the positive battery terminal for 30 minutes. Not sure if this is accurate.

these trucks have torque converter issues. take it to the dealer...its under powertrain warranty and see if they will fix it.

shouldn't need a $600 warranty voiding tune to make the truck drive correctly

There's a TSB out for torque converters, and also one for transmission shift solenoid (or possibly t-case solenoid?, though transmission makes more sense) for issues like you described.

I'm not sure it works on these trucks, but on BMWs with basically the same 6 speed transmission, the reset procedure is to turn key to ON (no start) and press and hold the accelerator to the floor for 30 seconds. I'm guessing the programming would be the same .

Appreciate the responses. I'll take it in to the dealer and see what they say. Lots of times i get the "we couldnt replicate the issue" but it's worth a shot.

I'm in an unfortunate circumstance where the closest dealer is the one I am not going to because of the little settlement I got, I vowed to never go there again. Closest dealership after that is 50 min away who actually treat me excellent, but again, long drive.

I tried going to a Chevy and even Cadillac Dealership (GM) in town but got turned down because they are not GMC...
