How to find exact factory specs?

I recently purchased a '12 Chevy 6.0 gas Silveraldo 2500HD WT 4x4 crew cab short bed and I plan to use it for towing a camper. It's a used fleet vehicle and appears to have good "work truck" options. I would like to find out *exactly what specs it has so I can make sure to find a camper I can safely pull.I plan to stop by a dealer to see if they can help. I was currious if they will be able to find a copy of the original spec sheet when it was sold. It does have a factory class 5 hitch on the back and the door jam sticker shows : GAWR 9500LB GAWR FRT 4800LB GAWR RR 6200LB and Model# K20743. I researched this but i want to make sure the numbers I found are correct for payload & towing, etc. Thnx for any assistance!

Payload will be right on the tire label in the driver's door jamb. Its a white label, black font, red bordering and yellow header.

In the glove box, there is a silver label with a bunch of codes on it, 3 digits each. The important ones will be GT4 and GT5. If you see GT4, you have 3.73 gears, and if you have GT5, you have 4.10 gears.

For towing capacity, if you have 3.73 gears, you are at 9,400lbs towing capacity at the hitch, no 5th wheel/gooseneck with 3.73. If you have 4.10 gears, you are at 13,000lbs at the hitch, 13,900lbs 5th wheel/gooseneck.

4800lbs front GAWR means no factory VYU plow prep so if plowing was in your future, you'd need some good ballast or swap the torsion bars.

K20743 is 4x4 2500hd standard box crew cab. C or K designate 4x2© or 4x4(K). 20 designates 2500HD (10 is 1500, 20 is 2500, 30 is 3500). 7 is box size, 5 being short box, 7 standard box, and 9 being long box. 43 is crew cab, 03 regular cab, and 53 extended cab.

Thnx! Unfortunately those stickers in the glove box are worn and not legible. Sure hope I got the 4.10 gears because the bunkhouse camper models we like are around the 30'+ lengths and i really didn't want to go that long with a bumper pull. Payload sticker shows 2878LBS.

I believe there is also a tag on the rear axle/diff that should have the code on it. Or jack up the rear and rotate the tire to count revolutions of the driveshaft/tire.

You might also be able to contact GM Customer Service and ask them to pull the build sheet for your VIN. I recently did that via online chat for my new truck, not sure how far back they can go.

take your VIN number to your dealership , they can list what's on your truck . get a print out for your file.

Private message GM customer service here on this site with your VIN number and they will provide you with a build sheet. There is also a thread on here to decode factory codes.

How do I private message a GM customer service rep? I'm not sure who on here is a rep when I look at the member list. I'm trying to get a build sheet for my truck.

Were you able to PM GM customer service? I get a message saying they cannot receive any new messages.

no not yet. I seem to be getting different specs provided from different sites also, so that's why I want to get the original build sheet. Unfortunately my work shedule doesn't line up that well to go by a dealership but hopefully soon I can do just that and see what they say.

When I bought a GMC Acadia I wanted a build sheet. I was at the Chevy dealer for some other work and asked the service advisor to print one off. They did and it gave a complete list of everything the car was originally equipped with.

Ok so far, I've check with local chevrolet dealerships and ALL told me to go look online myself! LoL!!! I did explain that I get different results when i do that and was told to check with GM's website. So I emailed a customer service rep...he replied saying my payload is 1890lbs/857kg, well my door sticker shows 2878lbs/1305kg. So even the gm rep is giving different info than what i found online and even the site he suggested i go to. Guess I'll have to resort to the ol'redneck way....hook it up and gas it..if it pulls it, theres your towing capacity...<smacks forehead>

So i was able to get 1 dealership to email me my build sheet(if its correct?) and they circled the GVW Rating 9500 saying this is my towing capacity....? thats the first ive seen i cant tow over 10k. I really dont see why this is so complicated. LoL! I know there are folks who tow over loaded but i know several peeps with similar trucks hauling 5th wheels that weigh over 9500lbs with zero issues.

    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode.
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
