iOS 11 update thoughts

Performed the update on my 7+ when it came out and noticed several improvements. Thought I’d share.

Biggest unannounced problem I noticed was fixed is the delay in changing songs when plugged in. Before the update, if I had the iPhone plugged in for CarPlay and was listening to music through it, if I tried to switch tracks it would take a few seconds. It’s now instant. Big usability improvement.

The new features are nice. Speed limits and lane assist shown in Apple maps works pretty well. Still not as good as google maps, but they’re slowly catching up in that area.

I don’t recall this problem before the update, but it could have been there... I’m noticing that when using maps it has me overshooting turns. It’s almost like the gps is a second or two behind. It doesn’t announce in time and the cursor doesn’t get to the turn until too late or something. It’s not like anything appears slow or anything, it’s just off somehow. If it was only when I was traveling a certain direction, I’d assume it wasn’t calibrated in a certain direction, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Could just be a case of the software sucking, but it’s annoying no matter the cause.

Anyone notice anything else?

i noticed that they took away the "message" option when trying to forward images from websites.... normally i'd press and hold an image... hit "more"... and it would have messages...now it doesn't.. i have to save the image to send via text...grrr... i have the 6s +.... it does seem a little faster to me.. .and i really like the do not disturb feature while driving...

you know I have not noticed much difference, of course I have not played around that much. The voice of Siri is the biggest change, still not 100% about her yet, the new voice that is.

I never used it this way before. An alternative you can try is to copy and paste an image. Not quite as quick, but at least there’s no cleanup after. Just hold on the image and choose copy then go to your message and hold in the text box and press paste.

I'm having a lot of issues to where carplay is not recognizing that my iPhone 7+ is plugged in thus no using the hands free. Sometimes I can go into the truck Settings -> Apple Car Play devices and click on the device and it'll connect others it may take me 5 minutes for it to finally connect.

I also have an issue where when I plug in the phone the music will start playing on the phone itself instead of through the head unit or when I unplug the phone, the music will keep playing on the phone to where I have to hit the stop button.

I am using the Apple lightning cable that came with the phone and not an aftermarket one, as I found carplay never really works with aftermarket cables.

So, if I were in your shoes, I would be rebooting my phone. If that doesn’t do it, I’d unregister everything and pair it like new. If there’s a way to have it ask you to trust the truck again, that’s what I’d be after.

I don’t think the new update that came out today should do anything for this issue, but I’d install it nonetheless. If after that you’re still seeing issues (and everything was perfect before the update) I would give Apple a call. You never know if it’s just an issue they missed. If anything like this was happening before the update, I wouldn’t bother Apple.

I’ve never had any trouble using the usbs in my console on top of my jump seat, but some swear you’re supposed to use the white one in the upper glove box. You could give that a try too.

I use the Amazon 'basics' lightning cables. I've been buying them for years as they seem to disappear from my house!

Good cables at a good price. The 3' are $6.49 ea.
