Company Called My References? Good Sign?

Hey guys and gals. So I have a odd question. I had a job interview about 3 weeks ago. And I found out that HR of the company called my references last friday. I am curious who has had the references checked and got a offer letter? It must be a good thing if they called and took time to speak with the references. It's been 2 business days and have not got any word from them yet?

Follow up directly with the HR person and ask them if there is any additional information they need, be proactive and interested. This is generally a very good sign that they are going to move forward

I called them about 2 weeks ago after I didn't hear anything back and the manager said to hang tight and that he is waiting for a answer from HR. Then my references called me and said they were contacted from HR?

I agree with Dale, after 2 weeks it is more than acceptable to give a call back to inquire on how the process is going. Also to ask if there is anything else they might need/want to see. Most people now don't follow up, so it could help the manager push for you.

Checking references is normal in some professions, means nothing...we check references for every candidate. For every ten we interview, we may hire one.

Y'all are persistent. Neither of my post college companies called references on me. Both hired me. My current job, I have been at for 6 years, and I have not known them to call references still.

As you said though, dependent on profession and the HR manager I am sure.

I own my own recruiting firm. I place mostly 100k+ Engineers and some clients do references and others don't. Very few people will actually be honest in a reference for fear of being sued so I find them useless. Best to have a cross section of staff interview and look for consistencies. Anyway....many times the manager hands off to HR and wait.....and wait. Most HR ppl don't like staffing and recruiting so they drag it out. Use the manager to push it on his end. Could be hung up on Finance or it could be a role that was not fully approved and is I that process. Good luck. Your situation is not uncommon

Thanks for the reply. I am thinking it is stuck in HR hands now. I am wondering how long I should wait to call and quiz him again? It has only been 3 business days since they called references
