Dealership accidentally tampered with my odometer, now what?

I agree with OP regarding reviewing records of a vehicle for mileage however if in this case it is a service record.  Service records only show up at the dealership so I would go one more step than just a record from the dealership.  I would also request that you receive a letter from GM Customer Service to acknowledge this error and correction as a supplemental record.  Anyone reviewing records on this will have sufficient info on the truck.

Don't you also have to input the mileage every time you receive new validation tags (if you have them in the US)?  In Canada we do and this becomes a record.  Also, you must also have all your service records which would validate your mileage up to that point so any potential future buyers would be able to see all that documentation.

I've bought and sold a number of used cars and can't think of one time I or a buyer of my vehicle got any service records from me or a dealer.  I don't think the dealer will cough up vehicle records on request to a potential buyer.  I believe it would have to be the current owner, maybe even the original service customer.   I wouldn't lose a wink over this.

Doesn’t the car fax have a heading “odometer discrepancy” when stuff like this happens? I see where the op is going with this. A buyer may not look at the individual records and see the discrepancy, but car fax will likely see it and point it out at the top of the page. Not a huge deal, but if I’m buying a car and I smell something funny with the mileage, I’d probably find one without the mark on the car fax.

I think the proper way to do this is to get a copy of your car fax. Maybe the dealer can help with this if you don’t want to buy it. Then check what it says. If it gives any red flags, call them (or there may be a button or something) and get it corrected there. It won’t fix the service records, but it may prevent the headaches you’re trying to avoid. Most would agree that the buyer won’t be looking at the service records for this. They’ll be checking the report.

If I had some extra time, I’d probably try to go up the GM chain to try to get it corrected in their system, if only so it doesn’t get re-reported to carfax.
