LTZ Headlights

I did Klearz before I upgraded to the LTZ lights. The Klearz look awesome. The only drawback is that it was VERY difficult (for me, at least) to take the headlamp assemblies apart and get them back together. I didn’t have more lights to practice on so I only got one shot at it. I’m sure I could have improved it with more practice but the permaseal is hard to get through.

This was my finished product with the Klearz lenses:

I added a slightly longer video of the LTZ lights in my LT.  If you're familiar with the LTZ lights and how they work, the video won't be anything new.  The lights function exactly as they do from the factory in a LTZ truck.  All that was needed was a resistor on each side to make the turn signals work correctly.  I forgot to put the truck in gear to show the day mode but that works, too, I promise.

I really want to do the klearz thing but I'd be afraid of damaging my headlights. I wish they had like a swap program with a deposit or something.. I send them some money and they send me headlights, then I return my headlights and they refund my deposit.

The amber in my headlights will forever bother me. No matter how many times I tell myself otherwise.

If you’re concerned about how to properly open and seal your headlight assemblies, there are a ton of forums out there with how to and “tips and tricks” for this. Check out HIDPlanet is one that comes to mind. The amber plastic I hate too, but holding off to see if I can find LTZ heads for reasonable before I go the klearz route.

Well, if they were like $500 to replace I'd be ok with trying, but they're so expensive! It's kind of like trying to re-size a diamond ring myself on a bench grinder.

Truthfully, a friend helped me do this on another car many years ago and it went through just fine, but I was forever afraid of leaks. He got a leak in his and now that one headlight is horrible yellow.

I keep thinking if the trucks get old enough, GM will allow exact reproductions like the eagle eyes they had for a while for the 14-15 models. Then I could buy one of those and clear it, and not have to worry as much, but that may still be many years away.

I've crawled ebay and car-part for probably a year now looking for good parts, but the prices are just so high. It's like they're priced in yen instead of usd.

There has to be a shop near you that does custom work. I would try and look for a shop so the responsibility in on their hands and not yours lol

Lightwerkz.net does custom work and they do a great job of making the finished product look super clean. Tons of experience with lots of different models and while they have them open they can add the klearz clear optic stuff, but also upgrade your factory projectors to something way better.

Here is a video of one they did with klearz and upgraded G5-R HID projectors.

I do dig the LTZ look as well but didn’t want to spend the money so I went the klearz route as well. I don’t remember what I paid for the klearz kit but I lucked out because the service manager at the local GMC dealership who is a close friend of one of my clients does the switch among other headlight mods on a semi regular basis. $100 a light for the install which I gladly paid after doing my taillights my self (huge PITA) and the look great and not a drop of moisture inside them all winter. Snagged an LTZ grill while I was at it! Lol

Question, is the bottom strip (turn signal) also an LED like in the LTZ set up?

No my friend it is just a replacement lens so the light is the same.  I actually had to stick an amber bulb in there because it’s normally a regular bulb and clear turn signal bulbs are a big no no with johnny law.  Although he did mention while doing the conversion that he could put switchback LED strips in there and that there’s actually a place that you can order them from. At the time I didn’t really think it was a big deal but in retrospect if I was to do it again I would’ve had him put the switchbacks  in.

Yea, my LTZ has the LED on the bottom, turns yellow when you turn on the signal, white when on. I kind of wish it would stay yellow at all times, just because the LED are so bright compared to normal bulbs.

Yah that’s the super slick feature of those LTZ is they already have switchbacks in them.  I wonder if there’s a way that you could bypass that resistor? I’m no wiring expert so I’m definitely not the one to ask haha

I am not either, this is going through the cycle (middle picture is the pause between white and yellow).

    • Great info to have, I printed out what you had in your document as well as Newdudes post as I could see this mistake with the hardware happening very often if not realizing what type of special bolts are being used and just guess on bolt size for torque or the good enough "easy" method as per whack in the used bolts with an impact and send it !.
    • I installed the Auto stop eliminator on my 21 Sierra SLT shortly after I got it. They have a detailed video instruction on how, took me about 20-30 minutes to do. I was apprehensive too to start tearing apart a new truck but it was pretty easy install. Like you mentioned get some trim tools. I went to Harbor freight and picked up a set. If you can find some install videos/instructions to give you and idea for a plan of attack you should be fine.
    • If all oil manufacturers had to meet a higher standard for not just the initial filtering of the oil but that they had to improve on their formulation so that the oil cleaned the engine such as the Valvoline R&P or the new Mobil product ( assuming it works similar of course ), and the oil was changed on an interval based on good UOA data, there shouldn't be any gremlins running around like miniture rats on top of your heads to be washed down into the oil pan below 😁

    • A while back on another thread there were comments and thoughts on air filters and I know that can tend to be a bit of a hot topic because of outfits that have a vested interest in selling aftermarket air boxes fitted with the gauze type of oiled elements touting the lower air restriction. However and unfortunately I don't know where I have seen the test results in the past about the amount of dirt through a test procedure that these style of filters do pass more dirt through than a properly designed ( not some cheap Chinese knock off ) paper/synesthetic media filter can do. Lake Speed had a conversation on that topic with one of the employees at Donaldson and there seemed to be a consensus of these oiled filters falling short in the absolute percentage of dirt holdback.    Which all ties back into how good the air filter is on the engine at keeping dirt out as that is going to reflect as a contaminant introduced into the oil as well as cylinder wear even if some of that dirt does find its way out of the exhaust rather then the crank case. Put another way that one can throw the kitchen sink at filtering the oil and using a bypass system which I fully expect will do nothing but good for the oils contamination but if the air filter system isn't doing its job then its preventing the engine from reaching the best wear/lasting case scenario instead.    Now perhaps this topic is or isn't for this particular thread but Grumpy Bear or anyone else for that matter, do you have access to some scientific trust worthy testing on engine air filter types to get some proper comparison data to post up.
