Powder coating rims?

Great deal! I was getting quoted $300 per wheel at my only local powder coater and his turn around was about one to two weeks.
You can buy pretty nice new wheels for $300 per wheel. Id find a new shop.

Well you get what you pay for. Was detailing the inside of the truck tonight and when I got out of the cab I wanted to admire my new wheels. Low and behold there was a huge piece of paint missing! Upon further inspection I found multiple cracks in the coating. Decided to run my finger over the bare spot and realized that there was zero prepping done to the rim before the powder coating. There is still a gloss finish on the wheel itself! Needless to say I’m pissed.

I would make sure prep work is done. Always the most important part of a coating job. The original finish has to be taken completely off. I would have your guy redo it.

Agreed. The problem I’m going to run into is I paid $112 to get the tires removed so I could do the powder coating. Not to mention the logistics of finding another vehicle for 3 days. The longer I’m thinking about this the saltier I’m getting. I’m a BIG advocate of doing it right the first time.

Quick update on the powder coating saga. Got the powder coating shop to admit that they didn’t prep the wheels. They said the just sprayed over the original finish because it looks like bare metal [emoji2359]. Anyways I am now taking one wheel at a time to get re-powder coated. The owner has taken on all expenses including the remounting/mounting of the tires. Which he should. But it really wasn’t a fight so I have that going for me. I have received 2 rims back that were properly sand blasted and prepped and the finish looks completely different. They now look like they came from the factory painted gloss black. 2 down, 2 to go.
