Need info on VVT please, timing not right, REALLY bad MPG

Cylinder #5 (going by memory) is the third from front on drivers side. It is super easy to get the socket on a bit sideways and crack the plug ceramic (ceramic is glass) there is some stuff in the way of getting lined up straight on that side of the engine. Now put away all the fancy scan tool equipment go grab a ratchet and socket and go take the #5 plug out right now. If it has ANY signs of misfire replace it and be dang careful not to damage the brand new spark plug when reinstalling.  BAM all your problems will disappear and you will drive off into the sunset with all your brand new expensive scan gear in the backseat never to be used again. I wish it was that easy, I really do. I've swapped that plug with cylinder 1, and I've had all the plugs out twice for compression test and changing the #5 cylinder valve springs, making sure they were all clean and making sure I put a different plug in #5 the first time, and completely swapping sides of the engine with plugs when doing the springs. The wires and plugs are less than 6 months old and have moved them around as well, and swapped two other coils into the #5 position. Did the same with injectors and #5 now has a new injector. Misfire stayed on #5 through all of that. I've had a noid light on the injector and a spark plug light on the plug wire and neither misses a beat. Got over 170 pounds of compression on #5. While changing springs I took the air pressure off and both valves travel up and down smoothly in the guides. The rockers are rocking with oil coming out on the rocker arm from the rods. I've been beating my head up against the wall over it. But the deeper it gets, the more it seems that, similar to spark timing, the whole misfire thing may be a side effect of something else.

I'd like to say thanks to all for the input so far. We're going out of town next week so I won't get back to the truck until the following week. I did buy the pdf shop manual which will help. Just want to say I didn't give up or get things resolved without posting what it was, just out of town for a week.

Well, I gave up and dropped the truck off at a GM certified shop near me. After a couple of days messing with it he called and said he was pretty sure it was a lifter so I told him to go ahead and dig in. He found the exhaust lifter on #5 to have a roller that was kind of chewed up and the cam was damaged as well. I attached a pic of the lifter, I hope it's visible. It's frustrating because No. 5 not even an AFM cylinder. He said the plastic lifter tray wasn't cracked and it didn't appear the lifter had rotated, not sure why it did what it did. However I'm not the original owner, it was a trade in vehicle at a Ford dealership when I purchased it back in November. It may have had repairs prior to me buying it that were done poorly just to make it run to trade it in.

 

So of course that meant new cam and all new lifters. I made sure he got the newest updated GM lifters, replace the plastic lifter trays,  and had him change the VLOM to the newer updated version. Knowing he was going to have the timing chain cover off and would be looking at the oil pump, I had him replace that too.

 

The truck now idles quietly and smoothly, no misfires, and has the throttle response of a new truck.

 

On a side note, a week prior to the repair I put new y-pipe/cats on the truck, bought it online from AB Catalytic, exact bolt up replacement. Since I got the truck back it threw a P430 code, poor cat performance bank 2. The cats are literally 3 week old and only ran a limited amount on the engine with the bad lifter before the repair. I know the cats are good. I don't want to continue on that topic on this thread, I'm going to start a new one on just that subject. Just wanted to say thanks to all who shared their thoughts, and post the solution to the P0305 misfire in hopes it helps someone who finds this discussion later.

Happy to hear you got it sorted out.  Have to wonder if the valve train noise was being interpreted as pinging and the ECM was backing off timing as a result. That roller looks like the early beginnings of the Honda V4 bike engine camshaft issues in 82/83.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
    • 286,740 Mile Services   8/6/2026   New AC Compressor. Refrigerant oil and dye, evacuate and charge system.  New exhaust system from cat back.  New Iridium plugs plus replace #3 coil Repair/rewire headlamp wiring (passenger side) and replace all forward bulbs. Polish lenses of both assemblies.  Pull rear rotors, clean and adjust parking assembly. Inspect, clean and grease front calipers. Check pads and shoes.  4 wheel power bleed of brake system. Dot 4 Reset idle speed 50 rpm higher New Serpentine belt.    Will need new pads in the rear in about 5K more miles.    Tax Title and License out the door just short of a grand.    AC clutch had bitten the dust. 1 year warranty on the pick and save replacement. Thing will make a Polar Bear cry Uncle.  He spent quite some time on the wiring. It was in the harness and he does nothing half. I got off cheap. I have considerable more light down the road. Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔
