Front End Humming between 45-55mph

As the title says I have a loud humming in the front end of my 09 silverado 4x4 which is at its worst between 45-55mph and upon deceleration. It seems to be coming from the front left side of the truck as the noise is not as audible when sitting on passenger side. It is not really that noticeable at other speeds. I chalked it up to wheel bearings and replaced both to no avail. I am going to have my tires rotated today to see if noise changes position. 

 

I have noticed scalloping on some of my tires but didn't attribute it to that because I have had worn tires before that have never made noise like this or this loud. It is a fairly high pitched hum/whiring noise. Tires are 285/65/18 bfg a/t 2s. I will post results after rotation today but do you think it could be a tire?

 

 

If it is not a tire where do I got from here? CV axles or front diff? Could anything related to the braking system cause this?

Do you have access to get the front of the vehicle off the ground? I am betting more than likely it is a Hub problem. Pretty common problem and an easy repair. You can check it by lifting the front of the vehicle and checking for play in the hub by shifting the tire in and out from the top and bottom of the tire. It could have play in it. But it could also be play from the upper ball joint as well so you need to make sure the hub is the part moving. If there is no play you can get someone to spin the wheel and listen to the bearing using a mechanics stethoscope or putting a long screwdriver on it and listening to the handle (Sounds funny but it works)

 

Just a direction you can go in. Here is a video of a hub replacement so you can see what kinda job it is in case it is a hub. Parts and all are in the description.

Yeah I thought it was the hubs I have just had both replaced and it didn't go away. I will check out the ball joints however as the truck has 140k and has never had ball joints replaced to my knowledge. I'm not hopeful it is in the tires as I have owned many sets some wearing unevenly and have never heard any noise like this coming from tires. Sounds more mechanical in nature but maybe I will get lucky.

      My 03 has a vibration at 65 and I too have already replaced hubs.  Another thing I have not checked that supposedly can generate vibrations is U joints.  Not sure the easiest way to check those, but they're relatively cheap so might just replace them for the heck of it.  Glad to see you back on the forum Chris.  You've been absent for awhile.

Actually might have found my issue. Was looking at front end and noticed drivers side cv axle shaft was black and had grease all over it where it had blown out. Passenger side shaft was clean. You guys think this is the likely source?

Does it make noise (clicking/clunking) at low speed going around a sharp turn?  That's usually how they sound when first starting to fail.  Just a matter of time though with a cut boot.  I dont think they are too expensive and not terribly hard to replace.

No I haven't heard any clicking/clunking while turning but I have noticed on a couple of occasions I have the sensation of something clicking in the front end through the gas pedal but not while I was turning so maybe not related IDK. Usually while I'm driving straight at lower speeds. I'm gonna get it checked out to be sure. Hopefully it just needs to be cleaned and have a new boot installed then packed with grease.

is the grease near the wheel side or near the differential side?

Here is one thing you can do to rule out the differential. disconnect the vent hose to the differential (On the drivers side top of the case) and hook a piece of hose (you will have to buy a roll from the parts store but you can get about 15 feet for 8 dollars) and route it from the top of the vent away from the wheel up the drivers door and into the window of the truck. Go drive your truck and listen the the hose. If it is the differential you will hear it. Also do the same test with the transfer case.

Yeah sorry haven't updated. Grease was on wheel side. Got CV axle replaced and tires rotated and no change. At this point I'm fearing something is going on with the diff. I will take you advice for checking the diff and post results.

Hey there, i have the same symptoms going on with my 99 silverado 4x4.  I have the clicking coming from my front end, both sides, coming from wheel area.  My front passenger cv axle is leaking it's grease from the wheel side boot.  Have replaced both front hub assemblies with wheel sensors.  I knew for a fact i had a bad u joint at the rear axle so i replaced that and the rest are all tight. (I am lucky enough to have access to a shop with a lift).  Will report back with any other findings.

Did you ever find out what the culprit was? I have the exact same issue on my 2013 with 103,000 miles. Replaced both front bearing hubs and new tires but same sounds..before I go replacing a bunch I was trying to see if others found a fix?

      Can ask that about a lot of places.   Holiday sells 91 for $1 over 87 octane. BP 93 is 80 cents. Amoco 93 is 80 cents Kwik Trips is $1.20 for 92 or whatever they have and $1 for the 91.   I know that this is not exactly same as what you are saying with the premium to premium debate of those two stations but why is there such a difference. Top Tier this and that, it's all BS. All the fuel comes from the same damn refinery, so give me a break.

      Why does Mobil Premium cost 90 cents a gallon more than Shell Premium when their regular offerings are but pennies apart?

      Was all the way down to $3.69 a gallon but then jumped back to $3.99 just because for some reason.   Diesel floats between $4.80's to $5.10ish a gallon. I even saw Diesel #1 for $6.09 today but nobody in there right mind even buys that in the summer.

      Mine just keeps lagging or getting stuck on the reverse camera. When I turn off the truck, get out, and close the door it will still stay on. It’s very intermittent and I would not be able to duplicate the issue.

      I was checking out fuel prices at my farm fuel retailer at their pumps and yes the farm price is a bit lower than the non dyed fuel and was glad to see that the regular farm gas price has dropped a lot from what it had been but what blew me away was the price of diesel as the spread now compared to before the prices went up earlier in the year, diesel was actually slightly lower than gas which was a switch from the theme the last number of years. However that sure isn't the theme lately and definitely not right now. The prices I will post are not from that retailer but just looking at gasbuddy for the main city in this area and instead of posting the lowest price someone found I will list the higher price ( and that may not be the highest price, just whatever someone posted on gasbuddy ).   So regular gas and there are a lot of stations listing the same price for regular is 1.68 a liter, premium 2.00 a liter. Diesel 2.03 a liter for a top price I saw on diesel.   Figures out to 6.36 a us gallon Canadian funds for regular and 7.68 for diesel. With the US exchange rate it would be 4.58 us for regular and 5.53 for diesel.    Thought I would figure that out to get a picture of what it settles out like compared to various US prices and its about the same as the current price in Fairbanks AK as Anchorage tends to be lower. So yes, these would be the prices and higher along the way on the Alaska highway where they know they have a captured market !, for fuel prices for those beginning the long drive back to the lower 48   The problem is our Canadian dollar and going to the states that have the high prices, boy do we pay then !
