2018 GMC Sierra Steering Steering Shaft Rust

2018 Sierra SLT  3200 miles

 

I have a creaking noise while turning left or right coming from somewhere in the cab on the drivers side.  It happens every time you turn the wheel, there is a known issue where grease wasn't applied to the steering shaft that goes through the firewall into the engine bay.  Brought it in for service and they "greased" it, I checked their work afterwards and noticed 2 things.

 

1.  They didn't grease the correct area at all, notice the white lithium smeared on the plastic cowling and no where near the end of the shaft.

2. Rust?!  The dealership says it's not rust but red grease...does anyone else have this "red grease" on that shaft inside the cab?

I have a 2016 with the same exact issue. They greased mine to start, no help. They changed the upper and lower steering shaft and it didn't help a thing. It's ridiculous

Every vehicle I’ve ever owned or worked has had some surface rust on the shaft. Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Nissan, Infiniti, Toyota. It’s just bare steel. It affects nothing.

Spray some white lithium grease in there yourself. Way easier than trying to screw with the dealer for something so minor.

They greased the inner portion of the shaft and it still creaks.  My thought was that due to the fact that this is a brand new vehicle at least my rotors should have surface rust on them before a steel shaft inside the cab.
