I have read a lot about adding the factory rear view cam to my 2016. I have ordered the camera and handle assembly and it should be here next week hopefully.

I was going to order the OBD Genie programming device that turns on the rear cam but started thinking that if I do that, and the dealer ever has to reflash my truck I may have to go back and use the obd genie again. No big deal unless something happens and the genie dies over time etc.

My local dealer said they will add the programming for $175. They said $100 for something from Chevrolet’s side and then $75 labor. The Genie is $199 and I dont have to go to the dealer and deal with all that.

Anyone one have any advice or opinions on either option?????

What is the genie? I just recently added factory backup cam in my 16.   Are you prewired under the truck and at the hmi?

I found a few people talking about the genie. It is a small obd2 device that programs the radio to accept the rear camera. Works just like factory. I don’t know how technically it works differently than what the dealer would do. But the threads I read about it say it works perfect. Just saves trip to dealer.

to be honest I am not sure about the pre wire part. I figured my 2016 Lt trim truck should have whatever it needs. If not I am screwed I guess.

Check the wiring at the tail light distributionblock and the wiring in the grey plug at the hmi

Might try to rephrase the question....

I have been thinking of getting a 2.5 HMI to get Apple Carplay.  The seller said they can program in the Rear View cam which is the same thing the OBDgenie does I guess.

So to rephrase my original question, what difference could I experience between getting the dealer to program which I assume changes the configuration with Chevy as well or getting the HMI programmed by some other means?

Could you tell me what wires I will be looking for specifically?

I checked and they appear to be there as well. So it should just be a plug and play, I’m upgrading to apple car play and it is apparently already pre programmed for reverse cam

Make sure the new hmi is programmed for it. Its also a good idea to have the radio module updated because if its not then the projection icon wont work which makes android auto and CarPlay work. Ihad to do that

Hello everyone, a new member, created an account just for this topic! I am curious about the OBD genie as well, I have done a lot of research and wish to add a backup camera through the tailgate handle to my 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT. So the way I figure it, I can buy a tailgate camera through someone's website, or from the dealer, and have the dealer flash the IO4 that I have with the new programming and pay about the same price as buying a OBD genie and camera from a website? Does that seem about right?

Hey 👋🏼. I’m looking to install a backup camera and would love to borrow an Obd genie instead of buying one new. Anyone have one and willing to lend it? Thanks
