Rear wheel well issue?

Recommended Posts

I had the rear wheel off of my 2016 Silverado and I noticed that along the inner lip of the rear wheel well there is a bead of sealant/caulk where the quarter panel and inner wheel well are spot welded together. I guess this is supposed to seal the seam gap between the two which sounds like a great idea to keep water and dirt out. The problem is that the bead missed the seam entirely on both the left and right wheel wells. Has anyone else checked this out?

I have felt the bead of sealant before but I have never actually laid eyes on it. I wash my wheel wells out every time I wash my truck and use my fingers to chase as much dirt and grime out. I'll have to look for that when the weather warms up again.

Are you out of warranty? Does not sound like it will get better with age.

The truck is still under warranty so I am going to ask if they will apply some sealant on the actual seam. I am sure they will say no but it's worth a shot. The GMT900 trucks have a lot of issues with rust around the rear wheel wells. Only time will tell how the GMT K2XX trucks hold up. I am kind of paranoid about this because in 2006 I bought a brand new Monte Carlo SS for my wife and about 6 yrs later with less than 50k miles the paint started bubbling around the drivers side wheel well. I took it to the body shop and he said all the Monte Carlos did that because of a gap in the seam between the quarter panel and the inner fender well. They sealed the seam and repaired the paint but the rust came back because it was rusting from the inside out.
