No heat=change antifreeze

My parents '96 Jimmy and '97 Sonoma have terrible heat. The service manager at the local GMC dealer told my dad to change his coolant from Dex-cool to regular 50/50 blend of reg. green antifreeze. Does this indeed fix the problem?? ANy thoughts would be appreciated.

 If the anti-freeze has turned brown it will make a big difference, the system will also have to be flushed and heater core back flushed.

Nooooooo, do NOT do that!

The two WILL MIX and make your problem even worse. Just a simple back flush at a full radiator shop and a refill with dexcool will solve your problems. My ZR2 had the same problem this past winter.

Ya that's a load of crap!Mixing Dex and green = serious damage to your cooling system because the last time I checked they break each other down instead meshing.

Do a total cooling system flush, change the thermostat and go back with a good anti freeze like Prestone or something.

Sounds Like some Very Bad Advise!

My father had to take his 1996 s10 Blazer back to GM and they flushed it under warranty. The pink stuff broke down prematurely.

There are plenty of good anti-freeze brands with Dex-Coll in them. I used Havoline Dex-Cool in mine after the motor swap. It's been fine.

The 1997 Blazer I have has had no troubles with the anti-freeze or heating.

Can someone explain how to backflush? I have just started doing the maintenance work so I'm still relatively new to doing it and I did want to do a coolant flush sometime soon. I was also planning on switching over to regular coolant instead of dex-cool.
