Armour All

Dear members

Monday morning I took my 02 Sierra to the dealership because of some paint pealing of the dash board  . The customer service rep. asked me, what I use to clean the dash with. Of course I said “Armor All" The guy replied by saying that Armor All should not be use. It traps heat in which it causes paint to peel off and also it will VOID warranty. I had to sit down with service manager for an hour and convince him that there is no information on the service manual on what not to use. So how true is this Armor All s**t?

Any feedback would really be appreciated.

That is a new one for me. I can't see how it would void the warranty. It isn't like it has to be API certified.

Did they fix it under the warranty? Hope so.

I only use 303. I first found it and read about it and saw where it was used a ton with boaters that sold me. The sun and fun on the water is the worst any equipment can get and if it was big on the water then the protection should be great on land.

Hope they took care of you for free.

Thanks for bringing this up.

I have also heard that ArmorAll is junk. Extang warns that the use of the stuff will void their warranty. I just wish I could find 303 locally.

It won't void your GM Warranty  Tell him to shove it.

I use 303 protectant as well as it is supposed to protect against UV etc.

That's BS for sure, I almost guarantee you that no matter what kind of cleaner you said you used the SM would have told you it would void your warranty. I was the Lead Tech at the local GM Dealer for several years and my Service Manager was one of the most crooked guys you could ever find--trust me, this was pretty common for him to do. If you bought the truck there, then they should try and work with you, if not go to another dealer and see what they will do, most will be glad to gain a new customer.

Try Zaino Z10 Leather in a bottle! It works great even on vinyl dashes. I've been using it for years and two of my three have leather! It has a UV 40 protectant and contains oils that will keepp you leather and vinyl soft and looking good for a long time! One thing I love about it is that it is NOT greasy or slimy at all....just goes on and makes the material nice, soft and smooth and keeps it that way and with the UV40 I think it's the best out there!

You can learn more about it at www.zainobros.com

If anyone else out there uses the Z10 they'll know what I'm saying. Maybe a few of them could chime in :thumbs:

I just got some stuff this weekend called Wash and Wax. The stuff for the outside seems pretty good but have not used the leather care or rubber care stuff yet

I have a bad encounter with Armour All, too. Well, that's what I was told. I had an '89 Cougar new in '88. All leather. The dash started to crack WAY prematurely. The dealership asked me what I used and I told them Armour All. he said that was the problem. I went to some detailling shops and asked their opinion. Surprised they told me the same thing. They said that Armour All is mostly water and will cause premature cracking, discoloration, and sometimes paint to chip. I have never used it again and never had another problems either.

Yea Armorall stinks. If you use it on your tires it will cause them to dry rott a lot sooner. Not that is that quick but it isn't good for them. Will cause Dashboards to dry out, crack, fade and you ever notice the dust that it leaves behind in the little creases in the dash? That is the armorall fading the stuff. I used to use it all the time. Now I don't touch the stuff. Plus I don't like my dashboards to be shiny any more. Too much glare. I like the matte finish. Like I had on the Neon. Trying to figure out what I could do for my Tahoe.

Regular old Armor All is bad for cleaning items such as leather and vinyal. It contains sillicates which work they way into pores of the material, and prevent breathing. Over an extended period of time this will lead to premature drying, cracking, and eventually frustations as you watch your beautiful dash turn to crap.

However, Armor All does make a leather cleaning formula that doesn't contain the sillicates. I use their leather cleaning wipes to clean my leather wrapped steering wheel and my dash on my truck.

Before ya clean with a product though, always check the ingredients to make sure it contains the right stuff.

I use a damp towel on my dash.

For tires, I use brake fluid. I heard it has rubber conditioners in it to help keep the brake lines from cracking. I figure if it conditions brake lines, it can condition my tires too.

What if you get some on your wheels????

Will good news

The dealership has agree to repair my dash board. The only thing, it's going to take all day to fix it. I'm wondering how they are going to fix the problem. They also ask me to promise them not to use Armor All anymore.

I do not use Armour All. It leaves a dust-attracting oily residue. Never heard of it doing that kind of damage though. I use Turtle Wax Super Protectant on some parts. According to them it protects the materials from damage, so if I get premature wear from it, it is coming out of their pocket. On the dash I use 409. Cleans w/o leaving a residue.
