Replacing check engine bulb

Recommended Posts

I took my 02 Silverado HD for smog. The guy said everything passed but the check engine light Failed.  Said I needed to replace the bulb or check the fuse.   Can I just get a replacement bulb and simply put it in myself or is this a circuit board issue that I need to take in to get repaired.

As far as I know, those bulbs are soldered to the circuit board.

I’d get a dorman or similar reman off of rock auto or send yours to get rebuild.

Its not just swapping a ping a bulb like it used to be.

If you do determine that it is the bulb, I would suggest just replacing the bulb, either with another similar bulb or an LED+resistor (you need the resistor to drop the voltage to the right level for the LED).  It's not hard to disassemble the IP to do it, nor is the soldering difficult to do.  You can also replace any other bulbs that are burnt out as well.  Note, switching to LEDs, you also need to "clear" the IP overlay (the visible screen with all the various dial images on it), as a regular white LED will make the display look blue due to how GM colored the overlay.  Not a problem for the CEL area, as it's colored orange.

The check engine light does not come on which is the reason it didn’t pass the smog  test.  I’m going to attempt to take the dash apart and see if it’s possible to replace a bulb.

Thank you for the info :seeya:
